Michelle Obama Takes London By Storm

10 comments Michelle Obama Takes London By Storm

If you watched any of the news coverage of Michelle Obama’s visit to an all girls school in London today, you’ll know why I’m crying as I write this. The amazement and adoration on the face of the girls and the authentic way Obama reacted to them was just wonderful thing to watch.  And Queen Elizabeth loved Michelle Obama too!  From the Time story:

“The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School has about 1,000 students, all of them girls ages 11 to 17, two-thirds of whom speak English as a second language. Fifty-five languages are spoken at the school. Ninety percent of the students are ethnic minorities, and no single ethnic group makes up more than 21% of the student body. As a group, they treated Obama as if she were an American Queen, a personification of what they can only dream of becoming in a country where no minority has risen nearly as high as the Obamas.

“I am just very touched,” Michelle told the girls, choking up with emotion as she spoke. “All of you are jewels.”

As part of her address Obama brought attention to the importance of education in the lives of girls:  “I am an example of what’s possible when girls are loved and nurtured by the women around them.”

The girls were estatic–cheering over and over at the mere sight of her. It feels good to feel so proud of my president and first lady again.

If you haven’t seen the video yet, you must. Watch the BBC cut here.

Michelle is a bright, strong, and inspirational first lady who I am sure we will continue to hear from and about. Lucky us.

Michelle Robinson Obama was raised in a blue-collar home on the South Side. She excelled in the Chicago public schools and got a scholarship to Princeton University. From there, she went to Harvard Law School. Michelle is a wonderful role model for young people!

When a reporter asked Michelle Obama if she was a feminist, she said, "I don't like labels." Oh, please. Michelle Robinson Obama's cowardly response lessened my respect for her. If Robinson Obama really wants to advocate for women, she needs to respect out-of-the-closet feminists, challenge male privilege, and admit that after her four-to-eight years of unpaid work as First Lady are over, she will insist that Barack pay her back by becoming a full-time househusband.

Catherine, although I hadn't thought of it before, I couldn't agree more with your Princess Di analogy.

Michelle Obama is truly awesome, and I am very proud to have her as our First Lady.

She is the new Princess Di - Queen of Hearts and Inspiration to women and girls throughout the world. Thank you America for getting it right this time!

I hope all involved know who Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was! Check her out! (We are very pleased about the Obamas' visit - just hope they get to Scotland one of these days.)
