Morning Mix: Santorum Takes The Lead. For Real.

Morning Mix: Santorum Takes The Lead. For Real.

President Obama announced his budget Monday, immediately framing the economic debate for the 2012 presidential election. The president’s budget emphasizes long term investments in education and research, reinforces the social safety net and pays for it with over a trillion dollars in new revenue over 10 years taken from expiration of the Bush tax cuts and additional reform like the Buffett rule.

Republicans hate it. Naturally.

The problem for Republicans though is that the policies the president’s budget embraces are widely popular with everyone except the conservative base.

Speaking of the conservative base, they seem to be solidifying behind Rick Santorum who now leads the Michigan primary by 15%. That’s terrible news for Mitt Romney who arguably has a personal tie to the state.

But Romney’s news gets worse. Pew Research has Santorum leading in the race for the Republican nomination, officially calling into question Romney’s status as a front-runner any longer. Romney leads the delegate count with 98 to Santorum’s 44, but there are a lot of primaries to go and no sign the party can come to a compromise any time soon.

Republicans also took a loss on the payroll tax issue, agreeing to accept a 10 month extension without demanding corresponding spending cuts. The key to this victory, as Brian Beutler argues, is for Democrats to stick to the same playbook when the serious business of Social Security and Medicare cuts become a reality. Reform of these programs is going to happen, the question is going to be who frames the goals and intent of the reform.

Hey, at least this gave us something to talk about today other that the pill. For a little while at any rate.

There is no way Santorum could take the presidency without some sort of illegal move, but it is disturbing that so many people would turn to him as a leader.

The economy needs liquidity = spending = jobs = pump priming = stupid time to "fix" the safety net. Progressives should still stand firmly and loudly against any cuts in the net, now, whether or not, realistically, they are bound to come. And we should remember the real lesson of indefinite detention and not focus all our efforts and all the onus on Obama. Ultimately, it was Congressional Democrats who sold us down the river on that one.

Sharon H said: "What Jeffrey fails to understand is that if Santorum does have his way, his twisted, perverted business would be in the first line of attack. Santourm, the puritan wouldn't allow sadistic porn to exist at all, much less be sold on the internet where kids could get access to it like it is now. So, he'd not only be out of business, Santorum might even impose a prison sentence to accompany it since he's also starred in some of the videos."

BRAVO Sharon! And a thousand Green Stars sent your way!! It's so amusing how Jeffrey can tout himself as a "republican/conservative" when he's anything but! He's just a sick greedy individual just like the rest of them! Always appreciate your posts Sharon!

Mr Santorum has ,called for the end of Federal and State financing for those wishing to attend college. ! Obviously he is now on EASY Street since he started working for K Street..
I must however thank him for allowing his poor wife to wear shoes whilst standing next to his "magnificence whilst on the podium. !!!

All this article was good for was stating that Sanitarium is taking the lead. So what? Who cares what Repug is No. 1. They're all out there with the same intentions: kill off the middle class, Medicare, Medicare, and Social Security and kowtow to the very rich. They can spew all the rhetoric they want, but their intentions will ultimately be the same. Anti this country..

The Budget, a topic above the Pill, for without it you couldn't afford the pill.

So much for the primary. I'll vote third party before I'll cast a vote for Insanitorum the Inquisitor. He's almost as bad as libtards Obummer and Biden!

Unlike Jack Kennedy, Santorum lets his religious beliefs rule his political decisions and is not ashamed to say so.
