Morning Mix: What’s Next For Santorum?

Morning Mix: What’s Next For Santorum?

He made a solid run at the nomination.  He was widely embraced by social conservatives.  He has a huge following and has revived his dormant political career, and he exited the race with grace.

So what is in the future for Rick Santorum?

One thing is for sure, he isn’t going the “Fox News pundit” route.  “Mr. Santorum, in fact, was terminated about a year ago, a person with knowledge of the parameters of his contract said Tuesday. Under the terms of his three-year deal with Fox — which the person said was actually in the range of five-figures per year and not the higher six-figure amounts that had been widely reported — Mr. Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, had 60 days after the network suspended him in March 2011 to confirm that he was not running for president. He never confirmed, so his contract was canceled.”

Yet, he doesn’t need a pundit gig now that he’s managed to bring himself back into the spotlight of the GOP. “Rick Santorum’s journey did not take him to the White House. But it represented a stunning turnaround for the former senator from Pennsylvania, who rose from being a political castoff to reshape the Republican presidential race and resurrect his political fortunes.”

But in order to finish establishing himself within the Republican party, Rick Santorum is going to have to make nice with his former rival Mitt Romney, and that could be hard to do.  After all, he did once say, ““I’d love to be able to get one-on-one with Governor Romney and expose the record that would be the weakest record we could possibly put up against Barack Obama.”

Of course, the most unshocking news is that he’s already planning for 2016. “I’m not going to say we haven’t talked about it, of course, you look and you say what are you going to do in the future … a lot of people said ‘prepare for 2016,’ ” [Hogan Gidley, Santorum's national communications director] said.

Still, that might not be as easy as it sounds.  As Nate Silver writes, “It is questionable, however, whether Mr. Santorum can expect the competition in 2016 or 2020 to be as soft as it was this year, with big names like Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey and perhaps others looming on the horizon, and as the Republicans who were elected to office in the 2010 wave begin to mature as politicians.”

Maybe that run was the high point of Santorum’s career after all.

Who cares, maybe a trip into outer space with Newt.

Preacher comes to mind. He would make a good right wing evangelical fire and brimstone preacher. Probably doesn't pay enough though, unless he got a mega church which we know brings in millions.

Next, he'll go home and watch his daughter continue to struggle with trisomy 18 syndrome. Maybe this child will make it all the way to her teens before succumbing to heart, kidney, breathing or one of the other problems caused by the genetic defect. Unlike most people, he's got the money to afford heroic measures. And he'll continue to talk his holier-than-thou smack about the parents who learned about their child's condition through pre-natal testing, and had abortions because they could not bear to watch their child endure such suffering.

If god told him to be a candidate and he believed it, he might still have enough faith to just wait until god had another message for him. Or, he might have wised up.

A few "Hail Marys" and a big fat paycheck as a K Street lobbyist perhaps?

A well-deserved oblivion, one hopes.

What's next for Santorum? Really, who the hell cares? But, I wish him well living on a very remote island that is sinking into the depths of the ocean!

He should open a fried chicken stand. Fried chicken, at least, is popular.

He should get an education so that he does not sound like a moron every time he opens his mouth. How does his wife live with him?
