Newly-Outed Arizona Sheriff Asks For Investigation

27 comments Newly-Outed Arizona Sheriff Asks For Investigation

Over the weekend, we covered the scandal surrounding Pinal County sheriff  Paul Babeu, who was accused by a former lover of threatening to deport the man if he told anyone about the nature of their relationship. After stepping down from the Romney campaign, Babeu has gone into damage control mode and is directly responding to the allegations.

CNN managed to interview Babeu, who has seemingly changed his story, claiming that he always knew “Jose” was in the country legally and never meant to imply otherwise. He explains that any legal threats he’s made related to Jose’s access to his campaign website and social media accounts:

This is very different from the story that Jose’s lawyer and local reporters are telling. There’s some excerpts from an interview with Jose in the clip below, and some discussion of the allegations with the reporter who broke the story. She describes some of the evidence Jose offered her to bolster his claims:

Babeu’s asked for an independent investigation into the alleged threats (after previously claiming he had no plans to take action). He wants investigators to look into both his alleged intimidation of Jose, and also a series of crimes he claims Jose committed against him, mostly relating to his website.

Gay is not the issue, his backward ideas are. If he is concerned that his conservative buddies don't like him anymore, aw let's have a pity party.

Arizona: Making Texas and Flori-Duh look good! (just barely!)

Babeu's just pissed off that his sexuality was made public and is doing what he can to save his reputation amidst the allegations against him, which I have no doubt are true. I wouldn't be surprised if he did abuse his power and use intimidation. This is a guy that's taken pages from Sheriff Joe Arpaio's playbook and backs nationalist, racist, anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic state laws. His hypocrisy is sickening. Oh sure Hispanics aren't good enough to be treated like human beings but they're good enough to sleep with. Instead of lashing out he should stop and consider his actions and the consequences of those actions that led him to where he is now. Ofcourse Arizona being the bastion ofconservative hate that it is, he still has many supporters that will stand by him as long as he does what he can to make the state unfriendly and intolerable for Hispanics. Of course the homophobes are slowly backing away from him though they won't admit it. As far as I'm concerned, his sexuality is not the issue. There's nothing wrong with being gay, but there is something wrong with being a hypocrite (though not legally) and abusing power.

Damn! Another right-wing hypocrite running for public office. Don't the Repugliscum ever give up? The GOP only win elections, cause the neo-con evangelical fanatics turn up 100% to vote on election day. The TP extreme bigots never lose their vote, and canvass their communities to get the vote out. We need to re-elect OBAMA, EVEN WITH ALL HIS CONCESSIONS TO THE FAR RIGHT, VOTE DEMOCRAT, Get out and vote for God's sake !!!

I'm trying to figure out, what with the governor's hair dresser declining her business, if it's a good day for gay rights in Arizona... This is horrifyingly delicious.

Honor him with the investigation and you will see he has done absolutely nothing wrong. Once again the press/media think they have a STORY they can spread with absolutely nothing to prove their fact's. The press/media have a agenda, that being whatever suits their story and how much damage can i do.

As ever, a gay republican acts like a republican. Accusatory, vindictive & whining like a baby being denied candy.

Frankly, the sheriff's comments come across as those of a whiner, NOT someone who has been wronged.

Time to cowboy up there Sheriff. And stop whining already. You're OUT of the closet, like it or not.

As well you should be, given the propensity for gay GOP types to actually FIGHT against LGBT equality.

Oh, good lord, did some of you listen to that interview? The Sheriff said himself that Jose IS legal, so enough of that.
What startles me is the statement by the Sheriff that being gay is his business and no one else's. Well, I regret to tell you, sir, that you're being gay was going to be made public whether you like it or not. You are a public figure and as such people seem to feel that your private life is no longer your own. The unfortunate fact is that Americans make public figures lives their business.
As I said before, if you had held your head up and not tried to keep your sexual indentitly a secret, some of this would be moot.
