Obama Launches Lily Ledbetter Ad (Video)

A new Obama ad focuses on the president’s signing of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act because, as the video’s narrator says, “women being paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men isn’t just unfair, it hurts families. President Obama knows that fairness for women means a stronger middle class for America.”

He’s right, of course, and not just about the Lilly Ledbetter Act. On a grander scale, over the course of the campaign, Governor Romney has shown time and time again that women simply don’t matter to him. From his silence on whether or not he would have signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (the infamous, “We’ll get back to you on that”), his support for a radical “personhood” amendment, which would eliminate all abortion and the Pill, his pledges to “get rid of”Planned Parenthood and The Affordable Care Act, his opinion that Griswold vs. Connecticut, which made birth control legal for married couples, was “decided incorrectly,” and his advisor’s comment that women’s issues are “shiny objects,” it’s clear that he is very uncomfortable talking about issues that matter to women and those who love them. (Probably because he understands that the more women know about his positions, the less they will like him.)

When he is faced with a woman’s issue, Romney simply drags out his wife Ann. She can handle it all! His recent comment “My wife has the occasion, as you know, to campaign on her own and also with me, and she reports to me regularly that the issue women care about most is the economy,” just shows how out of touch he is. Romney can’t even talk to women about what they care about; he has to send out emissaries to translate the woman-speak for him.

President Obama, on the other hand, has made it clear where he stands on women’s rights. In addition to signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act, he’s made a video showing his support for Planned Parenthood, reversed the “global gag rule,” which prevented U.S. money from going to family planning around the world, supported the Paycheck Fairness Act, and created the National Equal Pay Enforcement Task Force. He’s also been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and Gloria Steinem, and his signature achievement, the Affordable Care Act, ensures that women are no longer pre-existing conditions (it also expands preventative services offered without co-pays or deductibles).

Clearly, the record shows that President Obama is the better candidate for women. And earlier in the year, as some of Governor Romney’s more extreme views began coming to light, Obama’s polling numbers among women shot up. As the Obama team shifted focus to Romney’s time working at Bain Capitol, however, that lead started to close. And while Obama seems to have regained it in recent polls, it’s never a bad idea to make sure.

As the election draws closer, it is integral that the Obama team and their allies gets the word out about Governor Romney’s positions on women. After all, if they do so, how could Romney win?

Obama is simply out to distract us from the real issues and his own record
as President. The real issues we face - a faltering poor economy, very few
jobs, housing prices down 35%, heavy handed regs that keep piling on the
cost of business simply staying in business, the highest corporate taxes in
the world, the growing cost of entitlements and the unwillingness to rein in
record spending - are not being addressed. And when one takes a quick
look at the man's record, it helps to explain why he tries to distract us from
his 3 1/2 yrs in office - the record spending, record debt, record food stamp
outlays, record foreclosures, record bankruptcies, a new record of 40
consecutive months of unemployment above 8%, the nation's first ever
credit rating downgrade, his personal record of 100 plus rounds of golf
and more campaign stops than the last 5 Presidents combined, This is
Obama's record. It doesn't belong to Bush and it certainly isn't Romney's.
