Pepsi, Coke Alter Ingredients to Avoid Cancer Label

In my initial piece about reasons to quit drinking soda, I mentioned the potential of a cancer causing ingredient found in the caramel color called 4-methylimidazole. If that did not persuade you to stop consuming soft drinks, then you soon won’t need to worry about that aspect. Pepsi and Coke will cease the use of the chemical because of California’s law that would require the soft drink companies to place a warning label on their packaging. Think of it along the lines of a warning on a pack of cigarettes.

The two biggest soda companies in the U.S. say that it isn’t the possible cancer link in an additive that’s causing them modify their manufacturing process–it’s the cancer warning they’d have to put on their packaging that actually changed their minds.

The bad publicity would undoubtedly create a backlash against the two companies. This maneuver takes a potentially dangerous chemical out of the favorite drink of millions of people. A step in the right direction.

Don’t worry, Coke fans, they are not altering the secret formula.

Regardless of this positive direction, the soft drink makers still have some significant side effects to overcome. I have been slowly winding down my consumption over the last few days. I could never quit cold turkey. How are you doing?

i think it is shameful that the reason they are changing isn't to protect the consumer, it is to protect their image. doesn't THAT reason alone make you disgusted enough to quit cold turkey?

put it this way: if you found out your boyfriend was only dating you because "you make a cute couple," wouldn't you see that it was not a true relationship and dump him? how about if you found out the sole reason your boss hired you because your enthusiasm meant you took on tasks he found distasteful, not based on your skills or what you brought to the company?

if the reasons someone does something isn't because you are worthy, you don't deal with them. there are other things out there to drink. they have a lot less chemicals than soda, a lot less calories, some even have nutritional value built in. you CAN stop drinking soda cold turkey. it isn't addictive - your addiction is a habit, not chemical. just realize Coke and Pepsi don't care about you, and act accordingly.

I quit sodas nearly nine years ago. It wasn't that hard. I was drinking diet soda, which is bad for many reasons anyway. I have heard that coke or pepsi will clear the hard water ring out of a toilet. I haven't tried it, but if it is true at least it will have one good use.

I stopped drinking soda in 1973 when I learned that Coke and Pepsi can be used to neutralize battery acid on car battery terminals and also to clean up blood. This stuff is truly bad for YOU.

I quit drinking soda about five years ago when I realized I didn't like the excessive sugary taste of regular soda and the jolt of caffeine from diet soda.
