PETA Appeal Denied For Roadside Markers In Memory Of Cattle

154 comments PETA Appeal Denied For Roadside Markers In Memory Of Cattle

PETA is appealing the denial they received from Illinois officials to install highways signs in memory of cattle that died in two separate wrecks last year as they were being hauled to slaughterhouses.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Thursday that it sent an appeal to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The document asks Illinois authorities to reconsider their decision because the cows “suffered” and are “worthy of remembering.”

IDOT said they previously denied the application because the state’s Roadside Memorial Act states that “only relatives who lost loved ones in highway crashes may request memorials.”

However IDOT spokesman Josh Kauffman said PETA’s letter of appeal will be reviewed. PETA plans to pay for the cost of the memorial markers which would be installed in suburban Chicago and northwest of Peoria.

Not A Grandstanding Issue

The marker project may come across as another grandstanding issue for PETA, but it appears that fatal highway accidents involving farm animals on their way to slaughter is an increasing problem. Frightened animals are trapped inside overturned vehicles for long hours where they die or lay injured.

On January 14 a semi-truck hauling 42 cows on Illinois Route 37 crashed and flipped on its side in the ice and snow. The wreck set off a six-hour rescue effort for the cattle.

Daniel Shepard, the 35-year-old driver, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The cattle, piled on top of each other, were exposed to freezing weather conditions while 25 to 30 volunteers tried to cut open trailer where they were trapped.

A total of 11 cows died in the accident. Their bodies were taken to a rendering plant. The 31 remaining cattle were loaded onto other trailers and taken to their final destination.

In 2006 PETA tried to buy highway memorial signs in Virginia for hogs that were killed in a crash as they were on their way to slaughter at Smithfield Foods. Virginia rejected their proposal.

It is a shame that PETA has done so much good but at the same time have been hypocrites. They set back the efforts of other organizations trying to do good.

Mark D., "cows can be spayed or neutered"? Really? Are you a vet? Yes, of course male calves can be neutered......it's called making them a steer, and the animal rights activists are screaming about THAT being inhumane! Now, please explain to all of us just how to "spay" a cow. Do you have a clue how expensive and extensive such a procedure would be? It costs well over $150 to spay a housecat. Dogs are even more. I have horses and many who are forced to "spay" a mare because of health reasons say it's in the thousands of dollars, which is exactly why it is not routinely done. Since those who keep cattle and horses CAN keep the sexes separated, it is usually not a problem to prevent pregnancy. We don't allow fertile females to "mingle" with fertile males. It's called "responsible" ownership. Now, if many animal rights advocates had their way, we'd just turn 'em all loose and let them fend for themselves. Yup, bet all those cows would turn up their noses at all those bulls, wouldn't they?

Luvenia. Cows can be spayed and neutered, and humanity can easily stop eating factory farmed meat. I don't give a damn about human pratices or "culture". There's 7 billion humans on earth and they have proven they have less right to life than the billions of cows they cruelly slaughter. I have not eaten hormone and pesticide saturated, adrenaline and saturated unhealthy fats from the poisoned packaged beef, chicken, turkey or pork for ten years and I am far healthier for that.

Continued

Your idea of just leaving them alone and nature will take care of it is like saying that nature will take care of all the toxins we put into our land, air, water and food, it is naïve at best and a sure sign of denial. We can however push for a more humane way of raising and transporting our animals. We can insist that the raising of animals and food be returned to the smaller ranchers and farmers. If we were to stop eating the meat, the animals or at least 90% of them would have to be put down and cremated. The truth is NOT always pretty but it continues to be the truth. By the way Jane, your answer was NO answer and not ONE Vegan, Vegetarian or member of PETA has ever given a decent answer. Tell me where you would put them, how you would feed them and how you would stop their breeding.

Jane B. , LOL, your answer to my post was a joke at best and NOT thought out at all. First the MILLIONS of animals you speak of could NOT be just turned loose. They would starve and they would breed. They would end up in people’s back yard and on the highways. They, for the most part were never a native to most of the areas they now live in but were in fact imported. We have a huge area here in Florida where the wild boars are destroying the eco system which leads to the demise of the native plants and animals. Since all the predators have been almost wiped out they have NO natural enemy and breed at will. We also have a HUGE problem with large snakes being turned loose because the owners could not or would not take care of them. Again they are destroying our eco system and we are losing large number of our native animals.

Thank you, Joy. This was much nicer.

At PETA's headquarters in VA, in 2010 they received 2,345 animals, and only adopted out 44 animals. That is a 1% adoption rate and a 93% kill rate.
Tell me now that PETA gives a shit about animals. Check for yourself, you can even download a PDF from VA that tells you all this is true.
