Obama Delivers His Back-to-School Speech
posted by: Natasha G. 107 days ago

After much controversy, President Obama delivered his speech to children as they entered school after Labor Day weekend. He had a number of important points, including:
Most importantly, he urged every student to set a goal for themselves, no matter how large or small. Discover what you are good at, and set forth to develop your skills and contribute to our country. Hopefully this is a message that everyone can get behind, no matter their political leanings.
The White House's website has a list of classroom activities for teachers to engage students in discussion about the importance of education, one for grades K-6 and another for 7-12. In addition, the Department of Education will soon be launching a video contest for students, with details TBA.
- Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is.
- The future of America depends on you. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future...We need every single one of you to develop your talents and your skills and your intellect so you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems.
- Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you, because here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.
Most importantly, he urged every student to set a goal for themselves, no matter how large or small. Discover what you are good at, and set forth to develop your skills and contribute to our country. Hopefully this is a message that everyone can get behind, no matter their political leanings.

This was a very necessary and invigorating speech. When President John Kennedy made a speech to the school children, they were full of vim and vigor.

In Spartanburg South Carolina the right wing fear machine got the schools to pull to speech... until the rest of the community flooded the schools with their Majority opinion that if they dont show it, these parents will keep their kids at home to watch it.
The city school system agreed to show the speech.
So, in this case, the republicans managed to get a community to rally together in response to these fascist tactics, and won!
And this was a city that just a few years ago was a stronghold of Republican power in the State of South carolina!
Let's hope the rush limbaughs and Glenn Becks keep up their great job of bringing together so many people from so many different backgrounds under the banner of fighting these idiotic lies from the so-called "Right".

I live in one of the counties that refused to air the President's speech (if 'refused' is the right word; the school board claimed that they didn't have enough advance notice to be able to sort out the logistical challenges of trying to make sure that all schools got to air it because of their varying schedules, blah de blah blah blah). I must admit that I was sorely tempted to pull my older daughter (second grade) out of school so she COULD see the speech like some of the other parents did, but I settled for taping it and using it as part of a homeschool lesson (we supplement the public education with homeschool lessons as well). I took the time to watch it, and I found NOTHING wrong with it at all! What on earth is wrong with telling kids to stay in school, knuckle down and work hard, and find a talent they had and use it? Absolutely nothing! And yet because of a few fear-mongering parents (we live in a "blue" state, but our county is solidly Conservative Republican, not to mention is home to quite a few ultra-conservative megachurches that scream bloody murder about everything from Halloween to evolution being taught in schools), the students were denied an opportunity to hear from the President that an education is the best thing they can give themselves!
President Obama's speech to the students of America is a step in the right direction. We need to turn our school system around and have it actually MEAN something instead of dumbing it down like it has been!

What is wrong with the American public that they cannot accept good advice in the spirit it is given ... especially to the young ones that are so easily being led astray by their environment?!!!

Dragonfly Kid thank you for the reply. I still believe that not all Republicans are bad nor all Democrats both have taken actions that are good and both have taken actions that are not good for us or the country. Do some research and find that the "enemy," are the people that we know little about, unless we search them out. The people that control the politics and the media. The people that keep us divided by all these kinds of distractions. Who do you think really controls the finances; therefore the economy of the country? Not any politicians. Who do you think manipulates public opinion? Not politicians. Who do you think works 24/7, without our knowledge, to push their own agendas through government? Not politicians. Dig deeper, go back further in American History, look up all the bills being presented by both sides, read every word of these bills, check all who have been appointed in government and where they come from, then you will see a pattern, maybe change those you choose to label "enemy." Read Glenna Jones-kachtik comments in this post, she states it better than I regarding not using a political label to determine friend. You can not judge all by the actions of a few throw out for you to see, it is never that simple and all is never presented for us to see. We have to search for the individual truths. Don't be so quick to call someone your enemy because of a label, you may agree on more than you thought. Trace actions back to the very beginning in history.

Evelyn B. I really liked your post. And it's great that you don't label people. We don't want to demonize people like we have been demonized. But, there comes a time when you have to see who's withca and who's agin' ya. That's why we label republican congresspeople as bad. They earned the title. I don't need to remind you the state in which they left this country to our new president. Are you aware that the right is trying to obstruct, confuse and lie about every issue that we care about and want to make better. I'm all for not labeling people, but these people are tearing our country apart. You've seen it with the birth certificate, you've seen it with the death panels and abortion being funded by healthcare, you've heard the lies about illegal immigrants being covered. Does your rule about not labeling people outweigh all of the bad things being perpetrated by the other side? You need to decide who's representing what you care about and who is trying to stop you fixing what you care about and then determine, by their works, who is with ya and who's against ya. Labels are there so we can help identify our friends from our enemies. Sometimes they are used to hurt people who don't deserve it. It's up to each of us who use these labels in our conversations to make sure our intent is clear and our facts are straight.

Yes it was a good, positive speech. They are words that parents, grandparents, teachers and other adults should be telling their children from the time they are old enough to understand. It starts with adults reading with a young child that does not read yet. The responsibility, love of learning, reading and respect for others begins at home. I was a single working mother, my husband died when our son was very young, and being a single parent is no excuse for not instilling these values in our children or seeing to it that they have the best education possible. Young children learn more from what you do than what you say. Adults need to be better examples of these values. We need to stop labeling people, even here, such as because you have this opinion you must be "Conservative," and that's bad, or you must be "Liberal," and that's bad or Republican or Democrat and one or both of those are bad. Stop taking personal pokes at each other and respect the right of all to have an opinion,it is just an opinion. None of us are right or wrong all the time. Few of us really fit in any of those labels all the time, sometimes you may have a Conservative view on one issue and a Liberal view on another issue. The only thing I would ask now of the President is to put his money where his mouth is and start putting financial support in our schools, not with Corporate Executives. What could the Trillions of dollars done for our schools? Why is teaching one of the lowest paying professions?

I wish I had heard a speech like this anytime during my school years. I was a bit lost and didn't have good guidance or direction. I should have gone to art school, but instead became a bank teller, then a secretary, then an Admin, then a Tech Writer, and then a Web Designer. It took a long time to steer my career back to something creative. Looking back, I should have tried hard and not been so doubtful of my abilities. I strongly believe that when people truly start to develop their inherent talents and do that for a living, we will all be alot happier. I strongly believe now that it is the responsiblity of each of us to persue our dreams for ourselves and our fellow travelers. It just puts you in the best place to make the best impact on the world before you leave it. GO to school kids!

I am a former teacher who would have been thrilled to have a president speak to my students. His speech was excellent and he hit all the right notes. I feel sorry for those who are so frightened by a bright guy who may look different but who has the wherewithall to inspire change. He is not a radical bent on shaping our country differently. In my view he is a centrist and actually I wish he was more liberal and priogressive..
