Sorry Senator Ensign, You Can't Buy Yourself Out of This One
posted by: Tracy Viselli 122 days ago

I've written about Senator Ensign's soap opera scandal before, but today's revelations have made me really angry. As I stated in my previous post, I don't necessarily think politicians should resign over infidelity--it's just an unreasonable expectation. They are human even though they don't always act like it. I do think that politicians like Ensign, who are on record calling for others to resign for doing the same thing, should certainly think about saving us and their family and friends from the sanctimonious and dishonest excuses for their selfish behavior.
Today, thanks to a statement from Ensign's lawyer, we find out that the 51 year old member of "The Family" and the Promise Keepers had his PARENTS try to pay away his extra-marital affair. As Ensign's constituent and as a human being, what disgusts me must about Ensign's scandal is his cynical solution and what it tells us about the kind of America we live in. And apparently, that America allows grown men, who make decisions that affect our daily lives, to act like spoiled teenagers with enabling parents.
After lecturing the rest of us about what is moral and right, in the end, Ensign demonstrated how morally bankrupt he really is--he tried to pay his way out of the human damage he created with his recklessly behavior. Most of us don't have $100,000 to stuff into the mouths of people who threaten to tell our secrets, but if we did, would our automatic response be to bribe them to remain silent? I'm convinced that's not that case. No, it takes a special kind of smug, self-important fiend, someone so convinced of their own brilliance and goodness, to believe that they should be saved at the expense of their friends. And let's not forget that the Hamptons were Ensign's great friends before he had an affair with Cindy Hampton. And what is the response of Ensign's fellow paragons of virtue and holiness? Senator Coburn didn't hesitate to close ranks around his brother Ensign, enabling and protecting him at the risk of damaging others. Is that what Jesus would do?
In Ensign's letter to Cindy Hampton, he writes:
"Plain and simple, it was wrong; it was as sin. God never intended for us to do this. I walked away from Him & and my relationship with Him has suffered terribly. I know He loves me & I know He loves you. He wants to restore Darlene & me and Doug & you. More than that, He wants to restore our relationship to Him."
Yes, Ensign apologized to Cindy Hampton because he used her for his "own pleasure," but faithful to the end, Ensign is all about Ensign, telling Cindy Hampton what God wants--as if he knows. It's the height of arrogance, but what do you expect from a morally bankrupt hypocrite?
And by the way, Doug Hampton, Cidy Hampton's husband, alleges that Ensign was pursuing Cindy the day after she received this letter.

There are some glaring distinctions in all of the sordid relationships. . . Unlike Gov. Sanford Clinton did NOT abandon his office and official duties to disappear into the wilds of Argentina or any where else while he was extramaritaly occupied; nor did he wax adolescent about his "soul mate" and weep openly about having to leave her behind.
Ensign is so currupt that he hired the son of his mistress, fired her husband and her and took dictation from the members of COngress he 'lives with' Fed-Exed the 'Dear Jane' letter and called her to tell her not to pay attention to it. So much for the Christian Right and its ethics. The point is Ensign has broken laws here. And both he and Sanford have become major hypocrites by not only doing what they condemn in others but also refusing to do what they publically demanded of hose people to do RESIGN! You cannot be a Peacekeeper and screw your chief of staff's wife, carry on a torrid affair for your own "pleasure and hers" and have your parents coff up 96 thousand dollars to make it 'all better'. Ensign needs to be prosecuted and both Ensign and Sanford need to resign, go away and learn some humility, learn that the world does NOT revolve around them and actions have reactions. Karma is a fact of life. These guys cannot simply pay their way out of it or cry their way out of it, or apologize their way out of it. And they need to learn to do more than preach morality to the rest of us. Humility first. Humility second. Humility last!.

I've known Senator Ensign since he first begain his political days. I certainly don't condone his latest behavior but if everyone is convicted of what he's admitted and/or accused of, then I personally think there would not be too many left in the Senate, Congress or many others in the political field. A couple names comes to mind is Barry, Clinton and Jesse...they keep making millions and praised by the newsmedia and private citizens. So many lives in glass houses yet feel they are without sin and have the right to throw stones. He's a good man but like many that make mistakes and poor choices was defintely not thinking of the consequences at the time. Wonder if his wife is going to stand by her man as Hillary did. Just an ending thought.

John Ensign's record consists of payoffs by rich special interests and selling his votes to the highest bidder. I live in his district. This man shouldn't be removed or forced from office for his hypocracy. He should be indicted and prosecuted for his corruption. Because of his unmitigated greed and lack of compassion for his constituents I changed my party affiliation to Independent. After the sex scandal, I am now a registered Democrat. I will work tirelessly to see him in prison along with those who enabled him to commit the damage he has done to Nevada and its people, down to the last aid, consultant, contributors, and his parents. I am with the majority of Nevadans on this.

Pardon, that should read, "run everyone else's _personal_ lives", which should remain just that--Personal.

Leave them alone?!! No, honey, this schadenfreude-fest beats out my weight in rum raisin ice cream for the cold-sweet-irresistible trifecta. Running to Argentina like Sanford did WASN'T lying to his constituents? I'm an independent, but don't see most Dems screaming about how their beliefs should run everyone else's lives (then not sticking to those beliefs), let alone trying to tell everyone they can't use BC like a certain previous administration who let a bunch of slackers keep their jobs as pharmacists because they didn't like it. Big difference: it's called hyprocrisy. ("Do as I say...")
I also love that one of my best buds, who's gay, cannot marry the man he's been a model spouse to in all but name, but some of us straights can get married as a gift grab/extravaganza, cheat on wives and husbands, get married for a wide spectrum of stupid reasons--yet that's a real marriage and should be "defended" (From WHAT?). Yes, I'm pissed at both sides of the aisle: Obama's dragging his feet but not so much as Cheneysatan, who didn't do anything for what, 8 YEARS? and is now stirring crap as a political gesture.
I actually wouldn't give much a damn if these politicos were caught in flagrante delicto with llamas and Silly String, as long as they did what I'm paying them taxes to do and would just MYOB/STFU about the Rest Of Us. So I'm not about to "leave them alone" until they do just that.

Seriously, this is where fairness comes from all sides of the isles. Look at what Bill Clinton did, but he denied it. He pretended to be a devoted husband and loving father. We all know he was a loving father, but a devoted husband. Hardly. All from the left forgave him and still love him. So leave the Republicans alone, at least they have enough intestinal fortitude to admit their mistakes. At least they didn't lie to their constituents and the American people. I do not want to hear that Republicans run on a family values platform, because any politician who stands before you with their wife and children, smiling and kissing babies, is also running on the platform of family values. It doesn't matter, republicans or democrats, politicians who cheat on their spouses are snakes.

When viewed under the microscope of truth, those who talk loudest about how others should behave morally are the ones who violate their own words without conscience time and time again.

Prior to this Sen. Ensign had a fairly unblemished record. The morality and ethics he espoused and his voting record led me to donate money to his last campaign and toward his next campaign, prior to this scandal. I base my vote more on the voting record than personal convictions as I believe all politicians to be skilled liars and hypocrites. Still, I am saddened, but far from shocked, to see yet another politician caught with his pants down in open hypocrisy. Unfortunately this is all too common. When a politician is caught being openly deceitful and duplicitous in his rhetoric and in his actions we should all be outraged and hold him/her accountable. Ensign needs to resign immediately and put himself out to pasture. I dream of a day when the actions of a man speak to his morality and ethics and I can again put my trust in our leaders. Unfortunately, I do not see this happening anytime soon.

Wow, I wish I could be a Big Fat Stinky Hypocrite, scream at everyone else about how they're going to HELL, do something morally reprehensible, blubber "I have sinned against you, my Lord", and continue raking in bucks from the deep pockets of morons who trust me...where do I sign up?

First to Jack Spratt....What? Really?!!!! I didn't expect to read something like that on this kind of site.....I want to say to you...."Do you miss your mommy?" I can't even imagine discussing politics with you. "As sons we are rejected by our mothers sexually"....so as daughters are we rejected by our fathers sexually? I cringe at you even responding to that. Rejected???? I was taught that sex is between a man and a woman who are in love with each other and want to express a beautiful moment together. I was also taught that you are able to love people in many different ways. Moms and dads are love in a completely different way than you love a husband or wife and you should learn that from child hood.
To the topic.....I feel when our private lives are made public.....we have no choice but to answer to the judgment at hand. I feel he should step down and move on. He will never live this down as long as he is in office. People will forever judge him. As for him bringing GOD into this......he really needs to stop. He should consider becoming more private with his personal life. Imagine ALL the people affected by his actions.
