Porn Makes Straight Men More Accepting of Gay Marriage?

A new study has shown that straight men who view adult films may become more accepting of gay people and same-sex marriage.

The study, published in the journal Communication Research, provides a scholarly analysis of nationally representative longitudinal data from the National Science Foundation-funded studies of some 500 U.S. heterosexual men over the past six years, examining whether there is any connection between factors like pornography consumption, education and support for same-sex marriage.

The researchers, Indiana University Assistant Professor Paul Wright and University of Arizona’s Ashley Randall, noted that as a group it is heterosexual males who are the least likely to support same-sex marriage, and so they wanted to ascertain whether pornography consumption in particular led to a change in thinking. And the results suggest that, yes, this does seem to be the case.

Those men who did report watching pornography were more likely to support same-sex marriage than those who chose to abstain. Why might this be? The researchers have their theories.

“Our study suggests that the more heterosexual men, especially less educated heterosexual men, watch pornography, the more supportive they become of same-sex marriage,” Professor Paul Wright told The Washington Examiner.

“Pornography adopts an individualistic, non-judgmental stance on all kinds of non-traditional sexual behaviors and same-sex marriage attitudes are strongly linked to attitudes about same-sex sex. If people think individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to have same-sex sex, they will also think that individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to get married to a partner of the same-sex.”

The researchers also found that even if men chose to watch adult films containing only women, they were still more likely to report an acceptance of male gay marriage.

While I’m loathe to quote Mark Regnerus of the discredited anti-gay parenting study, he did in December write an article for the anti-gay Witherspoon Institute in which, citing research that backs up this recent study, he used the hilariously concise phrase that people who frequently use Internet pornography are “treated to a veritable fire-hose dousing of sex-act diversity” because those websites don’t strictly enforce content filters. Apparently some of that dousing might be sticking, so to speak.

Of course, there are some qualifiers to this latest research. This is not a causal link. It’s not like like you click on XXX videos and boom, you’re ready to go on a gay stag weekend. Also, there’s the little issue of religiosity. The more devoutly religious someone is, the less likely they are to report viewing pornography, but this does not necessarily mean they are less like to view pornography. Obviously, religiosity has acted as a predictor for opinions against same-sex marriage. This, and factors like this, have to be considered.

But just to trash the Religious Right theory that is bound to be raised by this analysis, that support for same-sex marriage means one is more inclined toward a wealth of other supposed vices, the researchers found no evidence that support for same-sex marriage acted as a predictor for pornography consumption.

Watching sex acts allows people to see others in different settings. This can help to reduce prejudice or bias. For example, one myth is that Blacks have bigger penises. Another is juicer vaginas. Watch and see for yourself. Women are women, regardless of origin.
