Supporters of Proposition 8, California’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, are facing fines of up to $49,000 due to violating campaign disclosure laws.
The fines are proposed by the enforcement staff of the state Fair Political Practices Commission against the campaign committee ProtectMarriage.com—Yes on 8 for failing to properly file public reports disclosing late contributions and contributions over $5,000, as well as failing to properly dispose of an anonymous $10,000 contribution. More than $1 million in contributions were not properly reported.
In all, the campaign committee faces 18 counts of violating state campaign finance laws.
Prop 8 campaigners have apparently admitted to the violations and have agreed to the fines. However, the FPPC will make further deliberations at its August 16 meeting before making a final announcement.
Prop 8 supporters are currently defending the ballot initiative in federal caught, a process that is extremely costly and has led to the campaigners seeking urgent donations ahead of the anticipated showdown before the United States Supreme Court.
Those who have followed the Proposition 8 case closely may also remember that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was fined $5,539 by the Fair Political Practices Commission in 2010 due to having apparently concealed donations it made during the Proposition 8 campaign, though the Church maintained this was just an oversight. The Mormon Church would later report it gave an estimated $189,903 in donations to the campaign. The complaint in that case was filed by Fred Karger, a prominent conservative gay rights campaigner and, most recently, a Republican presidential nominee.

+ add your ownWhy does any Church (paying no taxes, remember) have any standing in the Supreme Court challenging any other groups interest based on Church "doctrine"? ........ We are forgetting THE FOUNDING PRINCIPAL in the reason for being for America .... separation of Church and State.
FINE to the max.
Past member, so what makes a person straight? Being raped by someone of the opposite sex? A woman being raped by a woman? Being exposed to sexual prudery?? Nope I don't believe that sexual orientation is decided by rape.
Make them pay . . .
I say "Double the charge!"
Charities should not be financially supporting political parties, period. Doesn't matter if it's churches, environmentalists, medical research, or anything else. If I donate money to a cause I want it to go to supporting that cause, not getting lost in the political bureaucracy. I expect my charities to look for solutions, not pay politicians to look for solutions. It's time to eliminate support for gov't parties from all groups with charitable status.
Just posted in another thread before seeing this; wonderful, but not nearly enough is being done to stop religious meddling in politics. Stop tax exempting these Church's when they are found to be trying to influence actions with politics! Obviously, if they have so much money to pour into fighting legislation that will suppress human rights, they don't need or deserve the exempt status. They are abusing privileges.
I'm glad they fined those bigots, they should be fighting for a better world not discrimination.
They ought to be fined more, as they can well afford it, but I'd be very glad to see them PAY.
We WILL overturn Prop. 8 !
Well said, Daniel! We can see examples of that narrow-minded intention right here in this thread! "LEGALIZE HATRED!"
Never mind....this WILL happen! Prop. 8 WILL BE OVERTURNED. These hateful people have wasted their money and I'm delighted they've been "outed."
