Protests As Clinton Meets With Egyptian President, General

Protests As Clinton Meets With Egyptian President, General
  • 1 of 2

US Secretary of State Hillary met with recently elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on Saturday and, on Sunday, along with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Egypt’s military council, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF).

Long-existing tensions between Morsi and Tantawi, between the Islamists and the military, have heightened since the generals dissolved the Islamist-dominated Parliament on the eve of the presidential election in early June and assigned legislative and executive powers to themselves. The uneasy relations have remained following Morsi’s election. The new President has called for Parliament to reconvene, but Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court has upheld the disbanding.

Egypt has no constitution, no new government yet and an economy still foundering after last year’s revolution.

“Go to Hell, Hillary”: Protests Over’s Clinton’s Meeting With Morsi

Clinton offered what the New York Times termed a “muted pledge of support” for Morsi, an Islamist who was more than once imprisoned by Hosni Mubarak’s “American-backed autocracy” (and indeed, during the 18-day uprising in 2011). Clinton declared that the US “supports the full transition to civilian rule with all that entails,” said the US emphasizes the need for “building consensus across the Egyptian political spectrum” and spoke delicately about the SCAF’s continued hold on power. She also said that, in September, she would send a “large business delegation” to Cairo, to strength business ties between the US and Egypt.

Clinton is the highest-ranking US official to meet Morsi. Her reserved tone reflects a sense that “American attempts to intercede may be futile in a contest where the outcome remains uncertain, all the players are deeply suspicious of American motives, and almost any statement could elicit a popular backlash.” According to the New York Times, Clinton had planned on Monday to give “what was billed as a major speech about the Egyptian democracy” in Alexandria, where she will formally open a new consulate but, given Egypt’s uncertain political climate, she has called off the speech.

Indeed, crowds of at least 6,000 protested Clinton’s meeting with Morsi. Placards proclaiming “Go to hell, Hillary” and “You like the Islamists, Hillary? Take them with you” did not hesitate to make their points.

Clinton’s Meeting With Tantawi Called a “Provocative Act”

Clinton’s Sunday visit with Tantawi, during which she said that the US would like to see the Egyptian military return to a “purely national security role” was considered “provocative” by the Revolution Youth Union, one of the youth groups in last year’s revolution. The group’s general coordinator, Mohamed el-Sayed, said that Clinton was interfering in Egypt’s internal affairs by meeting Tantawi; prominent members of Egypt’s Coptic community refused to meet with her. Some secularist opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi’s party, have even accused the US of conspiring with the Islamists.

What in the world is Clinton giving billions of dollars (that we have to borrow by the way) to the brotherhood that hates America and its infidels. That is you and I for the most part. We should never have interferred with Eygpt, Libya, or Syria. Clinton has gotten thousands of people killed by making our military back the hateful Brotherhood in taking controlling of those middleeast countries.

She is a true IDIOT.

Cont'd from below:
There were hundreds of protestors outside the US consulate burning US flags and posters of Obama and Clinton. As Clinton left, they bombarded her motorcade with tomatoes, bottles, and shoes! They did the same outside her hotel. They are furious at her support of SCAF and they don't want ANY interference in their internal affairs. They know that the US wants to impose their noose around the neck of every government in the Middle East, and they will not stand for it.

I suspect Ahron is speaking tongue-in-cheek --- says the authority on Islamic ruling (ie Beth S), whose views are well known to all regular participants of Care2.

Ahron would also include his Grand father or mother in the catagory too and make a joke they wanted sex before burial too. What blatant RUBBISH coming out of rubbish minds. The whole story is fabricated yet the Islamophobes like to put their spin to make it seem true.

Come on be fair Live and Let Live

Thanks, Sandra. I don't get on FB much, partly because I have family who are muslims (very nice people), so I don't want to offend them personally. However, as nice as they may be on an individual level, I agree with you that there are many, many alarming things going on in the world of islam, especially women's rights in Egypt.

As utterly disgusting having sex with one's dead wife may be, I believe it was passed, but at the very least -- according to Al Arabiya -- it was up for a vote. A number of very disturbing legislative issues being pushed by the Muslim Brotherhood (the Ikhwan) and the Salafis aimed at marginalizing women in Egypt are happening and unfortunately not very well covered by the Western media.

Thank you for speaking up, Sandra. Looking forward to hearing from you more.

I suspect Ahron is speaking tongue-in-cheek.

It is quite interesting to see the Well Known Islamophobes back at it again. They seem to churn out some rubbish and it challenges the intelligence of Care2 readers. The non-sense about sex with the dead wife ---- What the heck are you people on?

You don't see that it is a fabricated story by some bleeders just to tarnish the fledgeling democracy? Make the new boys the devils before they do any thing. Nothing at all to do with the religion (which forbids the husband even from touching the body of their wives). The body is handled by the females, washed, shrouded and prepared for the burial. The husband can help in carrying and lowering the coffin in to the grave.

Where does the other garbage come from ???? the GARBAGE minds omit Garbage.... Shame on them all. It is the US soldiers who wash the dead bodies with their urine but the Muslims are supposed to give the utmost respect to the dead. Anyone practising anything different are doing so and are totally contrary to the Islamic teachings and I am certain there are some crazy idiots who would do just that --- and they are not Muslims alone.

Where is a WOMAN'S CONSENT in any of these situations? The fact is, a Muslim woman's 'consent' in any situation isn't regarded as important. And please don't try & feed me some line of rubbish regarding 'living in an Islamic country' or 'not understanding the culture'. I've lived in an Islamic country for many years, was married to a psychotic Muslim man, watched my friends married to Muslim men be subjected to horrible abuses & physical assaults. I've also read the Quran from cover to cover & am now married to an ex-Muslim man who has researched the history & claims of Islam for many years. Been there, done that. Islam is not a culture. It's a very dangerous, misogynistic cult & government system which systematically abuses women, whether they be dead or alive. Islam is also not a race, and is NOT worthy of any respect whatsoever. Islam itself has no respect for anything, anybody, anywhere, and destroys cultures from the inside out.

Beth S.: there are so many horrible, atrocious crimes committed against women in Egypt & other Muslim countries around the world, much like - and far worse than - the example you posted. If you're interested in keeping on top of info like that, there have been some great groups started on Facebook by women who are equally appalled by the manner in which women in Muslim countries are treated. The Iranian & Syrian atheist groups, as well as Acharya S., also post a lot of articles & links to articles similar to the one you posted. It's absolutely frightening to realize how many atrocities Muslim & non-Muslim women have committed against them by Muslim men on a day to day basis. Hillary Clinton - being a woman first should, as well as a politician in a democratic country which supposedly respects women's human rights - should be setting a far better example for women & other politicians. Especially ones such as Egypt's politicians, amongst many others, who do not respect women's human rights.

And back to Ahron E: according to you, only a man has to be a consenting party to any type of action taken against a woman. Muslim men CONSENT to throwing acid in the faces of women, many who are not their wives. Muslim men CONSENT to beating women to death. I myself was nearly killed by a Muslim man such as this. Muslim men CONSENT to lighting their wives and other women on fire. Muslim men CONSENT to raping their wives. Where is a WOMAN'S CONSENT in any of these sit

Ahron E, don't presume to know what does & does not bother me. It disgusts me that you could outrageously DEFEND a man having sex with their dead wife's body. What kind of person are you? These types of crimes against women are widely accepted in Muslim countries. Not only can Muslim women not feel safe, valued or respected while alive, they & their family members now have to be subjected to horrific atrocities such as this. Even their CORPSES cannot be left in peace because Muslim men cannot control what they have in their pants? And you're trying to make this vile, evil practice sound as if it's acceptable & part of some cultural preference? You yourself have some serious problems if you can defend this 'legal' rape of women's bodies, brought to you courtesy of Egypt's government. HE is consenting to having sex with his dead wife's body. SHE is not. He's not hurting anybody? He's violating her CORPSE in doing this. It appalls me that any sane, caring human being could defend this type of atrocity, and yet another violation of a woman's human rights.
