Retired Police Dog Rescued from Shelter, Then Taken Back By Handler

A retired police dog that was abandoned by his owner was recently saved by an animal rights group. The eight-year-old German Shepherd named Buster was on the shelter’s list to be put down when the New York-based nonprofit Four Paws Sake intervened and rescued him. The organization’s mission is to rescue dogs like Buster who are on death row at animal shelters. Buster worked as a K-9 police dog since he was 16 months old.

“We simply helped a homeless animal who after 8 years of loyalty was left behind. It’s something we deal with day in and day out,” Four Paws Sake’s representatives said in a statement. “We encourage the public who are looking to give a second chance at life. Please go to Animal Care and Control and adopt.”

But within three days of Buster’s rescue hitting the news, his owner – who stated “personal problems” as the reason for surrender – took Buster back. Four Paws Sake announced the news on its Facebook page Tuesday evening.

“He’s living in East Harlem. Should any of you see him on the street, let him know we tried,” the post said. “For those of you who donated we will be refunding all of your donations. Thank you.”

Buster had a home ready for him when his handler took him back unexpectedly on Dec. 15. The post went on to say the family that was lined up for Buster was “incredibly sad.”

There are many groups out there with a mission to save and adopt out service dogs like Buster. Often, service dogs – especially those who serve in the military – have trouble coming back to the United States, getting adopted by their handlers, or getting adopted in general. According to the organization Save a Vet, retired military or law enforcement dogs have trouble finding a good home because of their training and experience in the field and/or injuries sustained during the job. And if they are not rescued, they are put down.

Ryky, a retired military dog, and her handler made headlines over the past few years for their work lobbying for service dog rights. The two worked with organizations to get veterinary care to retired service dogs and to give the issue more visibility. Sadly, Ryky passed away in September, but her work helped to pass a United States bill that guarantees all overseas service dogs military transport to United States soil.

how pathetic are we as humans to exploit dogs as long as they are useful After we "retire "them they're dumped ina shelter, stressed scared traumatized then murdered SHAME on our military for doing that .In this time we are recognizing our military for its sacrifice, they should step up for the animals they "use and exploit"

Okay, the story is that the dog didn't go back to the handler who dumped him. It went to a second handler. So that means the dog is presumably safe.

Don't ever call murder camps for pets "shelters'. They are not "shelters", they are committing crimes daily

The handler is a criminal disguised as a police officer and should be himself jailed, and a good home found for the dog he wanted to murder. You don't give a dog back to a dirtbag like that.
