Santorum Tells Puerto Ricans To Speak English

Santorum Tells Puerto Ricans To Speak English

Republican crusader-in-chief and presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told a crowd of Puerto Ricans on Wednesday that their path to statehood is only possible if they make English their primary language.

No word yet on whether or not anyone has explained to Santorum that the Constitution says otherwise.

Puerto Rico currently recognizes both English and Spanish as their official languages, a position Santorum finds offensive. “Like any other state, there has to be compliance with this and any other federal law,” Santorum said. “And that is that English has to be the principal language. There are other states with more than one language such as Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal language.”

The Constitution does not designate any official language and there is not a requirement that before a territory becomes a state it must adopt English as its primary language. Some states like Florida have passed laws declaring English the official state language, but before Puerto Rico becomes a state Congress would need to give its approval. Several English-only measures have been introduced but none has ever passed.

Santorum also said he doesn’t support allowing residents in territories like Puerto Rico to vote for President, another position I’m sure went over well with Puerto Ricans.

Santorum was in the U.S. territory as part of a campaign stop that included town hall meetings with residents.  Puerto Rico holds its primary on Sunday and a later November referendum will decide whether the territory will pursue statehood or remain a self-governing U.S. commonwealth.

Hawaii was originally Filipino. Obviously, they have an inalienable right to pursue keep the language. Louisiana, mostly French, & Penna. German & English. English became the law in 1779 in Penna. - it's the law!

Understandably, Hawaii allows the language of the the Filipinos, Louisiana French, & PA, German, HOWEVER, all three prioritize ENGLISH, so why can't chicanos & latinos so some maturity, and follow like these & other states?

Indepencia' Puerto Rico!

We bought Puerto Rico from Spain when they put it up for sale. It's costing us a fortune, however, we needed to keep Castro from getting it, and have two naval attack ships, and 2-3 Coast Guard cutters there & on patrol.

Yet still. crime is so rampant, they had to call out the National Guard there 2 trs. ago.

By example here, they want to kling on to Spanish, and push it on us.

IN PENNA, BY LAW, ENGLISH IS the official language. That's the law. Maybe for the rest of the country, we never HAD to make it a law. (In Germany, absolutely, the language in German, & that's it)!

Give Puerto Rico it's independence, maintaining a protactive oversight. They deserve their own country, & we deserve to not have to pay EVERYWHERE, just because, unlike other immigrants, they're too immature to be respective of the U. S, and learn OUR language.

Again, in Pennsylvania, ENGLISH, only, BY LAW !!!!!

He went to Puerto Rico. Maybe he should have learned Spanish first. If he can't campaign in an area where they may talk different from him, it's on him to learn how they talk, not the other way around. Thanks, Santorum. Those are more votes for Obama.

"Santorum also said he doesn’t support allowing residents in territories like Puerto Rico to vote for President, ... ."
Not enough to refrain from campaigning there, though.

Hypocrite.

Brady - let me first say Santorum is an idiot. But you sir made yourself look nearly as dumb.

Immigration has nothing to do with this post. At all. So I'm not sure why you brought it up.

Also it is not a known fact that everyone in America is an immigrant besides "original" Native Americans. First, they supposedly migrated here as well so according to your theory they would also be immigrants. But more importantly, I WAS BORN IN AMERICA. Whether my ancestors were immigrants or not, I am not an immigrant, nor is anyone else of any race or creed or religion who was BORN IN AMERICA.

Again, this issue is about Puerto Rico becoming a state or not and their official language. You try to point out that we're all immigrants (which we're not) and that how would we feel if the government told us to go back where we're from. Well sir, obviously that would suck but it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC. Also where would they tell us to go. WE WERE BORN HERE. If the government told us to go home we'd just walk down the street. Even if you tried to send me to my "ancestors home" where would I go? I'm Native American, Irish, British, German, and Polish.

On top of all of this, the fact that immigrants shouldn't even have been mentioned because again they're irrelevant to this discussion, I'm now going to explain to you why, EVEN on the subject of illegal immigration why it doesn't matter that my ancestors were immigrants.

1. I was born here. The beauty of A
