Thursday was not the best day to be a Republican.
First your party starts off with a kabuki of women-hating legislation on the floor of Congress, then it trots out its most prominent nativist birther to hold a bizarre press conference where he announces his intention to try and tap taxpayer dollars to continue an investigation into the authenticity of President Obama’s birth certificate.
That’s exactly what Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio told a Phoenix radio station on Thursday. Arpiao, who is battling federal racial profiling allegations related to his zealous enforcement of immigration law and targeting of Latinos announced his belief that the president’s birth certificate is a forgery and that he feels compelled to “do something” about it.
“I’ll have to decide how to go with this and get some more help from our detectives that we should pursue,” Arpaio said. “When you get information about a criminal violation, I think it’s incumbent on somebody to look at it and do something about it.”
Arpiao had been conducting an independent investigation into the authenticity of the President’s birth certificate with the help of the “Cold Case Posse,” a group of “concerned citizens” with private funding to chase World Net Daily conspiracies.
It’s hard not to see Arpaio’s motives as a means of distracting from the very real sea change in opinion he faces. Arpaio wouldn’t answer questions about his private donors, citing “Second Amendment concerns” but should he decide to dip into public funding for his racist campaign he won’t have a choice.
