Should Animal Protection Groups Team Up with Michael Vick?

Now that Michael Vick has been released from prison, many people are wondering if he’ll partner with PETA or another animal protection organization on an anti-dogfighting campaign. While the Humane Society of the United States is currently considering working with Vick, PETA has no plans to do so.

For nearly 18 months, PETA had been in discussions with Vick and his representatives about creating a public service announcement (PSA) about dogfighting. Unfortunately, it became clear that Vick only wanted to work with an animal protection organization in order to convince the NFL to reinstate him. Vick cannot simply say that he is sorry when it suits him—he must see the error in his ways and express genuine remorse.

After consulting with mental health professionals, PETA believes that Vick’s behavior may show a deep psychopathology that could render him incapable of changing his ways. You really have to be “wrong in the head” to do what Vick did, after all. Until he undergoes a brain scan and psychological testing to detect physical evidence of psychopathy and determine his ability to experience remorse, there’s no way to establish whether he will reoffend. Someone who trained dogs to fight, who drowned and hanged dogs who wouldn’t fight, and who laughed while watching his family dogs fight for their lives does not deserve a multimillion-dollar contract or the privilege to serve as a role model to millions of children.

PETA sent a letter to the NFL asking that Vick be required to pass psychological tests before they even discuss reinstating him. Vick has not acted on PETA’s request for psychological testing, indicating that he’s unwilling to take steps to show that he wants to atone for his actions in some small way.

Fortunately, several compassionate and respectable athletes, including Houston Rockets forward Ron Artest, mixed martial arts fighter Tito Ortiz, and world welterweight champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley, are picking up the slack. They’ve all appeared in PETA PSA’s about dogfighting. (See http://www.petapsa.com/index.aspx to find out how you can sponsor a PSA.)

If you suspect that dogfighting is taking place in your area, please contact the local police department. For guidelines on reporting cruelty to animals, see http://www.PETA.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=46. Please also ask your elected officials to do more to stop dogfighting in your state. I know this man is horrible and if I had my way any person that hurt a animal would be locked up for good. This man is low then scum and believe me i'd love the through them all in a ring. A dog fight puts a shiver down my spine. But in this and the other two comment as I said I would like these dogs helped.

But if he only thinking of himself he's still missing the point and you wouldn't worry about considering him.

I think if he has a way in helping more these close down it maybe worth a shot. If he know's other people that do these horrible acts and get them stopped then hy not. All these people need tobe stopped and if takes someone that did it to save lives. What he did was horrible and people won't forget it but those other dogs need to be saved.

I would really like to be more disrespectful and nasty towards Vick right now but instead of wasting time let me just say this..These kinds of Terriers are such great dogs and companions. I have (2) myself, father and daughter one being 18yrs and the other 16yrs. They are so great; they love Kids and all other Animals! I can’t imagine how anyone person could ever think of trying to make a fighting profit off such loving passionate caring critters. I hope they give Vick a life long sentence. Play football again my ass, he can play in prison! Similar to where he kept his dogs IN PRISON!!
WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND! KARMA, Vick!!!!!

When I heard that the HSUS was going to have him as a new employee, I nearly imploded. I couldn't imagine they'd sell out to that murderer. No amount of money would I have that freak next to dog, cat or any species. To me, he is as useless as tits on a bull and there's no reason to think he could be rehabilitated. Has a serial killer or pedophile been rehabbed? No. Neither will Vick. I was happy to see that the Falcons have not reinstated him and I'm hoping that his career is over. I truly hope NO team picks him up and if they do, I'll be the first one out on the streets with a sign protesting and I hope you all do the same at in your community.

Hooray for PETA! It makes me proud to be a member. I don't care how he was raised around animals or what his psychological profile reveals. Teaming him up with animals is tantamount to putting Hitler in a nursing home.

What he did to those poor suffering dogs is reprehensible. Whether or not he is remorseful (I believe not) is irrelevent. He is dangerous and the animals would sense this. Why subject them to a monster? If a womwn is raped should she have to spend time with the rapist? If someones house is broken into should the burgler be invited to dinner?

Sometimes good does come out of bad, but in this case my gut feeling says "No". I don't think Michael Vick can or will ever feel empathy toward any other living creatures. Believe he would only join up with the Humane Society of the United States to reinstate his career in football with thoughts of himself only and future $$$. Before considering working with Vick, the Humane Society should take a poll on whether the people think it's a good idea. We should all write to them and voice our opinion.
