Will animal experimentation soon be a thing of the past? Thanks to Israel, it just got tougher for companies in the USA to purchase primates for experimentation.
Due partly to the efforts of dedicated animal advocates in Israel and throughout the globe, Gilad Erdan, Minister of Environmental Protection — who oversees Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) — has refused Mazor Farm permission to transport primates to SNBL (Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories) in Texas.
Facebook’s Shut Down Mazor Farm page played an active role in this effort. Yuval Ron, who authored the Care2 petition asking Israel not to approve sending Mazor Farm primates to SNBL, notified me of Erdan’s decision.
“I sincerely hope that that was the last nail in Mazor’s coffin,” said Ron. “SNBL has cancelled their order and it is unlikely that they will ever work with them again. Considering that they are Mazor farm’s last client outside of Israel, it certainly looks like we are approaching this miserable saga’s end.”
A sincere thank you goes out to all Care2 members who signed the petition as well as the numerous advocates who took the time to email INPA with your desire to prevent Mazor Farm from sending primates to the USA. Ron was also the author of the successful Care2 petition asking EL-AL Airlines not to transport the Mazor Farm monkeys to Texas.
Ron credits Riva Mayer, from Let the Animals Live, with accelerating the push to the Shut Down Mazor Farm campaign. Ron told me “…she [Mayer] has turned to many organizations worldwide, which helped creating the international pressure in such a short time.”
In what appears to be a last ditch effort by Mazor Farm, it has filed a lawsuit against INPA for approximately 3 million shekels (about $742,000) for allegedly informing the farm that shipment of primates to Texas was given authorization but then not keeping that obligation.
“The entire suit is just a desperate attempt to minimize the damage, and personally I think its chances of success are slim to none,” said Ron. He also told me he read the entire lawsuit and found no evidence any promises were made to SNBL by INPA. “Either way we won.”
