Supreme Court Rules: Monsanto’s GMO Alfalfa Will Remain Illegal

Last week, Care2 and the Center for Food Safety implored you to stand up and take action to protect organic food, and you responded by the thousands.

Thanks to your willingness to fight for your food, the Supreme Court ruled against Monsanto’s appeal to lift the ban on marketing and selling its genetically modified (GMO) Roundup Ready (TM) alfalfa.

Although the well-funded Monsanto public relations team is trying desperately to spin the facts about the Supreme Court’s decision in their own favor, there should be no confusion: while the High Court ruled in favor of Monsanto by reversing an injunction that was part of the lower court’s decision, more importantly, it also ruled that the ban on GMO alfalfa remains intact, and that the planting and sale of GMO alfalfa remains illegal (Huffington Post).

One of the most appalling facets of Monsanto’s appeal was that they claimed the American people just don’t care about what they’re eating. As long as it wasn’t “intentional”, the biotech giant claimed consumers will not reject GE contamination of organic alfalfa…despite the fact that more than 75% of consumers believe that they are purchasing products without GE ingredients when they buy organic.

It’s important for the American people to realize that this ruling is a major victory in the fight to protect their right to healthy food.

Companies like Monsanto think that their size and influence give them the right to put whatever chemically altered products they want into the food supply without having to answer for it.

Through continued actions like this, individuals and familes demonstrate that they do indeed care about what they are eating, and that they demand the ability to eat truly organic food without fear of GMO contamination.

I signed every petition I could find against this beast Monsanto. A long time ago I watched the documentary "The World According To Monsanto" by a French journalist, it had such impact on me. we need to see it again, and again. It was pulled from the internet. (by Monsanto?) What power they have!

I'm proud to say I'm vegan and will continually fight against GMO development of plants and products. Animal products and their by-products are another issue and I will not discuss them here. Those of us that follow a vegan lifestyle are proof that the human spieces does not need to consume living creature's flesh to live a healthy lifestyle. But we depend on, and have a right to, a natural plant-based food source.

I support organically raised plant products from my local farmers. Yes, I do shop a chain for some items, but we all must stand up to those who want to change the natural products the earth offers us through GMO modification. We all deserve, and have a right to, this earth's naturally raised products. Man does not have the right to genetically modify nature to achieve a greater harvest to selfishly gain monetary wealth through genetically modified plant based foods.

I ask that you reading this PLEASE take a stand against Monsanto, and others that propose genetic modification to our food products. We all have a right to choose - please don't let big corporations make decisions for us.

@ Dennis: the Supreme Court is supposed to rule based on the law. By doing what they did, they sent a very strong message: every concerned citizen needs to stop being lazy and apathetic, get up off their asses, and start talking to their representatives and lawmakers to put comprehensive legislation in place. It's not the Court's job to legislate, it's their job to interpret whether or not the law was followed. The problem here is the laws, and the corrupt pricks who create them.

Let's PUT THEM IN THEIR PLACE.

Please help keep GE alfalfa our of Canada. Would it be unreasonable to conclude that Monsanto's strategy is to make GMOs a non-issue by polluting the world with it and then it becomes a moot point? We have to help everyone all across the world stop the spread of GMOs.
