Wolf Mountain Sanctuary Re-Opened
The paperwork is in and Wolf Mountain Sanctuary (WMS) is open — thanks to you! County officials demanded the sanctuary re-permit in order to remain open, but WMS could not afford the pricey process. After being bombarded with almost 13,000 petition signatures and emails urging them to open WMS, officials finally listened! Help more wolves.
Kevin Keith Saved From Death Sentence
Thanks to supporters like you, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland spared Kevin Keith from execution last month. Death Penalty Focus created a petition — signed by 14,000 Care2 members — to save this man, who many believe was convicted based on flawed identifications. We are so happy Governor Strickland listened to all of you. Read more.
EU Seal Trade Ban Takes Effect
On August 20, the EU ban on seal product trade went into effect. Thank you to all the Care2 members and animal activists who continue to fight for seals. Although the ban has some flaws, this major step forward gives us hope for even better seal protection and a complete ban of seal products in the future. Read more.
Federal Judge Rules Military Gay Ban Is Unconstitutional
Last month a federal judge ruled that the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service personnel, known as “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT), is unconstitutional. The judge will now issue a permanent injunction to prevent enforcement of the DADT rule, ending such discharges. Activists are working hard to ensure DADT is eliminated for good. Read more.
Florida Bans Fox and Coyote Pens
Earlier this summer, we celebrated when one Care2 member’s petition helped convince the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to draft a rule banning all fox and coyote pens. A new petition with almost 3,000 signatures was sent to the FWC just before they voted to ban fox and coyote pens statewide. Read more.
Tribe Stops Mining Company From Destroying Their Land
Survival International partnered up with Care2 to create a petition to stop one of the largest mining companies in the world from destroying a tribe’s land. The petition to help the Dongria Kondh hill tribe of eastern India garnered nearly 10,000 signatures. The ongoing support of the tribe and activists made this victory possible. Read more.
Care2 Member Fights For New Tethering Law and Wins!
One Care2 member started a petition in support of a new anti-tethering ordinance for her community and rallied enough support — and over 700 signatures — to make her petition a success. Care2 member Caroline and Dogs Deserve Better (DDB) promoted new regulations for chained up dogs that favors both humane animal care and safer communities. Read more.
Senate Passes Small Business Aid Bill
The Senate passed a measure to aid small businesses with tax breaks and expanded credit with a vote of 61 to 38. The bill aims to help Americans get back to work and create an estimated 500,000 jobs. The Care2 petition in favor of small business aid, sponsored by Elaine Marshall for US Senate, collected almost 13,000 signatures. Read more.
African Penguins Win Protection
The Interior Department announced in late September that the African penguin will be listed as endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. All thanks to Turtle Island Restoration Network and the Center for Biological Diversity for taking legal action, as well as the many Care2 members who support those organizations. Read more.
Senate Passes Bill To Ban Sale of Crush Videos
More than 100,000 members signed both the Care2 and American Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPCA) petitions to ban the sale of crush videos — and thanks to your dedication we are almost there. Once President Obama signs the bill, the sale of crush videos — depicting live animals being intentionally maimed, mutilated, tortured, wounded or killed — will finally be banned! Read more.
