While the intellectual battle waged inside the Supreme Court over the constitutionality of health care reform, it was outside where the political battle really took off. And who is at the center of the political battle? The Koch brothers.
Conservative billionaire brothers have sent the surrogates, the Americans for Prosperity, to rally against the bill. The protest featured notorious anti-health care crusaders like Rep. Michele Bachmann and Sens. Jim DeMint and Rand Paul and will do little, if anything, to impact the actual deliberations of the Court.
Of course that’s not the point as Robert Greenwald points out. With the Koch brothers funding group after group to “protest” health care reform the astro-tufers’ goal is to control the political narrative and to alter public perception of the bill. After all, this is why the Kochs created and funded the Tea Party.
Their interest in the litigation though goes beyond just the optics of it all. One of the challengers is the suit, the National Federation of Independent Businesses as received over $88,000 from a Koch controlled charitable foundation. And they are heavy funders of the amicus organizations as well.
As the arguments and analysis unfold, remember that the opposition to this bill started, and is continuously funded by, men who believe our democracy is theirs to buy.
