Tom Price Resigns as Secretary of Health and Human Services

If the Trump administration has a theme song, well, at this point it very well may be “Another One Bites The Dust.” This latest person in President Donald Trump’s administration to resign is Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Price, formerly a Republican Congressman from Georgia, was one of the president’s first Cabinet picks after his surprise 2016 election win. Price, a former doctor, was considered the perfect appointment – a far right social conservative with a medical background and a love of blocking access to abortion and birth control.

But just like so many of the administration picks that proceeded him, Price took extreme advantages of his new position. Despite claiming to be a fiscal conservative who wanted to cut government spending, the only spending Price appeared interested in cutting was budgets for enrollment in the Obamacare insurance exchanges.

Meanwhile, he was running up his own bills by chartering expensive private flights and even using military jets, all at great expense to the taxpayers.

“The White House approved the use of military aircraft for multi-national trips by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price to Africa and Europe this spring, and to Asia in the summer, at a cost of more than $500,000 to taxpayers,” Politico reported. “The overseas trips bring the total cost to taxpayers of Priceís travels to more than $1 million since May, according to a POLITICO review.”

Some of that expense, Politico learned, included bringing his wife along on some trips.

While Price had already been outed as taking a large number of private jet trips, the sheer amount of expense that was discovered to have accumulated – especially after Price himself cut the HHS travel funding budget – had both sides of the aisle calling him out on his lavish expenses.

“Tom Price is a physician and was a respected member of the House for many years. Many of us were delighted when he was appointed to his present position. He is a talented man and we still have hope that ObamaCare will be ended with something better replacing it,” wrote Charlotte Hays of the conservative-leaning Independent Women’s Forum. “But right now, I’m wearing my new T-shirt. It reads, ‘I voted for ObamaCare repeal and replacement, and all I got was Tom Price’s lousy private jet bills.’”

Price spent much of this week attempting to smooth over the reveal, including offering to reimburse the government a small portion of his expenses. “Price said Thursday he would reimburse the US government for the cost of his private air travel, though not for the full cost of chartering the planes, which ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars,” CNN reported. “Instead, a spokesperson for HHS said Price would cut a check to the US Treasury for $51,887.31, the amount for his seat on the private flights he took.”

That check, however, did little to end the controversy. Instead, the White House announced late Friday afternoon that Price resigned. According to the Washington Post, “Tom Price, President Trumpís embattled health and human services secretary, resigned Friday amid sharp criticism of his extensive use of taxpayer-funded charter flights, the White House said. The announcement came shortly after Trump told reporters he considered Price a ‘fine man’ but that he ‘didn’t like the optics’ and planned to make a decision by the end of the day.”

But while the White House may hope this issue will simply fade away, reproductive rights advocates note that Price was just one example of the ever growing pool of corruption, greed and lack of concern for the general population that plagues the current administration and its supporters.

“The Republican Partyís problems didnít start with Tom Price, and they certainly wonít end now that heís gone,” NARAL Pro-choice America said in a written statement. “Tom Price was allowed to rob women of our constitutional rights and undermine the healthcare of millions of Americans, but anti-choice Republicans didnít bat an eye until he became a liability for their own political careers. We hope Donald Trump will do better with his next nominee, but we wonít hold our breath.”

Price is just one of a number of administration officials flying high on lavish private jets funded by American taxpayers. Tell the President that you are no longer willing to fund their private travel.

Petition signed. It's good that this criminal scumbag who ripped off tax payers is gone. Unfortunately while the Republican healthcare plan is terrible, the Democratic plan to expand the ACA is also terrible. We need single payer universal healthcare, that most people support, as Bernie Sanders has proposed. Both corrupt corporate owned parties are refusing to support single payer universal healthcare. Some Democrats have agreed to support single payer universal healthcare, but too many like that crook Nancy Pelosi who is worth 100 million dollars, and Diane Feinstein are refusing, because they are bought and paid for by big pharma and our criminal healthcare industry, like the Republicans. This is why we need sane progressive leaders like Jill Stein and Bernie Sanders, who support single payer universal healthcare, unlike most of the criminal politicians in both corrupt parties.
