There are cities across the country that that have abandoned industrial buildings. What if you could convert those structures to indoor farms?
PlantChicago is a non-profit organization that is converting an old meat packing plant to a vertical farm. This is a brief video about the project.
The goal is to produce food and discover creative ways of using energy and compatible waste. This does not seem to be a buzz word showcase project. The intent is to create a viable business model that could be replicated by other communities.

Now this is a very good idea, I know lots of disused warehouses that could be converted into indoor farms and I am sure they could use solar power to run them.
Thanks Gina. I sure hope this goes well, as it could be something that would catch on. With all the buildings sitting idle or abandoned it would be so useful. Also some could be made into suites for the homeless, who would pay what they could and help care for the building...however this is sometimes not cost effective, installing showers and toilets etc.
Emilie, I agree that some of the older industrial buildings could be converted to green affordable housing. Still people need a way to support themselves in that housing. If this works folks could generate income and livelihood..
While this is definitely a worth while & innovative project (& far better than letting old buildings go waste), I personally would love to see old industrial buildings turned into shelters for the homeless which is desperately needed in every big city. I'd rather see my food raised in the sunshine. Still though, kudos to these guys for coming up w/such a creative solution & reduce the wasted space which is so badly needed. Thank you!
sounds like a great idea, thanks for the article
