Rep. Virginia Foxx: Apologize or Resign

I’m not going to waste many words of Rep. Virginia Foxx.  What she said on the floor of Congress today about Matthew Shepard was reprehensible. She should apologize or resign.  She is our shame as Keith Olbermann pronounces below about 2.5 minutes in.

Thanks, Faye R. You are totally correct, absolutely right, you have educated yourself. The fear campaign to prevent change, to prevent health care has been deliberately sponsored by pharmeceutical and insurance, carefully writen procedures at town meetings are delivered into the hands of those who have not educated themselves and fear the lies they see and hear on to.v. These people need to read the actual plan. It is out there and available; they need to listen to the president who was elected to make this change for the people.

Virginia Foxx continues to make misleading statements regarding the health care plan - that the Republican plan would save Senior lives - there is no Republican plan that I can find out to address this. She states that the allowance for counseling regarding living wills will lead to senior deaths!!!!!! She is fear mongering -seniors are scared the health care plan will affect their Meicare - NOT!!She also states there is no hunger in her 5th district of NC - She is out of touch as she should pay a visit to the Food Banks to see how many more people are needing food than ever before. She said that people who need food can wash dishes in the restaurants! Does she mean young mothers with children at home, senior citizens and disabled can fight teen agers for the few minimum wage jobs available washing dishes?? Another statement she has made is that "no people don't have health care available" - they can go to the emergency rooms!!!! People need preventive care, care for expensive medicines - our local hospital is in financial straits because the emergency room is overrun with people who have no health insurance. She should resign and let us elect someone who has compassion - check her voting record against action for senior abuse and other bills favorable to the middle and low income people in our district.

A few thoughts...

The American President

Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". I've known Bob Rumson for years, and I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it. Bob's problem is that he can't sell it! We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and character. And wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism and you tell them, she's to blame for their lot in life, and you go on television and you call her a whore. Sydney Ellen Wade has done nothing to you, Bob. She has done nothing but put herself through school, represent the interests of public school teachers, and lobby for the safety of our natural resources. You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, 'cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league.

The American President

President Andrew Shepherd: For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was, to a certain extent, about character, and although I have not been willing to engage in his attacks on me, I've been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being President of this country is entirely about character. For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is why aren't you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party's most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you're smarter than I am, because I didn't understand it until a few hours ago. America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest.

Prior to the 1970s you could pretty much do that in American cities as well. In rural America you could sleep with your doors open...and we used to for the cool night air. Things began to change. Work ethics went down, education went down, morality went down, etc., drug use went up, victimization went up, lack of taking responsibility went up, etc., and these will all continue to get worse. On top of that, you have the Democrats trying to scare everyone into this idea of socialism, massive government, handouts, bailouts, fear mongering, hate mongering, lying cheating and stealing, and the Republicans aren't far behind in some of those things. We have the government blame game instead of the government fix it program. From one of the best movies I've seen with a great speech:

Joy, you say that people in "Europe" don't need guns for self-defense.

Do you mean that there are no rapes in any European country? No home invasions? No murders? No burglaries? Wow!

Because, as we all know, Europe - like every other place on earth - has crime. And crime victims. And if people are being raped, murdered, assaulted, burglarized, and so on - then obviously they DO need a means of protecting themselves, don't they?

If I recall, when guns were essentially outlawed in Britain back in 1998, didn't the crime rate go up immediately - and stay up?

Whereas in Newnan, Georgia, when they passed an ordinance that each head of household HAD to own a gun and keep it in the home for self-defense, the crime rate was immediately cut in half. And has stayed that way for perhaps 20 years now.

Actually, I do fear America and its guns, and when I am out at night...while driving I lock my car doors, and if I must walk somewhere at night, I will only do so with companions. I have lived and worked in other European countries that do not need guns for self-defense. I lived and worked in a European country in a large city and could safely walk my dog at midnight with no fear. I was amazed to view the stars from the cool of the night safely alone outside at 2 A.M., instead of inside behind my window. I have learned much from other cultures and am truly grateful for that education, but do not misunderstand me, I do like America, and will vote and work hard for my country. We simply have a long way to go to become a nation of peace with respect for one another so that individual self-defense is not needed in one's neighborhood, town or city...not even thought to be needed.

Come on, how many times have I heard Repugs? You people lack such originality! I can think of so many more CREATIVE ways of insulting the other side; but that's your job, you name callers!!

And good, I am glad you have fear. Your party is so great at instilling fear in the general public, maybe it's about time you got something from the other side!

Don't you get it? Fear makes you weak, and when you are weak, the government can take advantage of you. Just look at what they have been doing? Fear and ignorance are not a part of Democracy! It's WE THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE! Stop waiting for someone else to take care of you, get off your ass, and start doing something! "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Yeah, that's a great line from a great Democrat. Even I can recognize greatness in the other party!
