What Does Breast Cancer Have to do With Animal Welfare?

78 comments What Does Breast Cancer Have to do With Animal Welfare?

According to the CDC, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Unfortunately, millions of women (and men!) are affected by this disease and millions have been spent on animal testing that has produced no results.

As millions of animals suffer in vain in labs as the race for the cure continues, the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has launched a campaign to ask companies to switch to alternative research methods with the stance that the “genetic, cellular and physiological difference from humans” make animal research virtually useless, in addition to coming up with misleading test results that can end up doing more harm to humans than good.

According to the FDA, 92% of drugs that show promise in animals fail in clinical trials. If you missed it before, take a minute to read Simon Chaitowitz’s Why I Take Animal Tested Drugs.

There are, however, already some organizations that are working on humane alternatives to find a cure. From PCRM:

Humane, nonanimal research is being conducted by compassionate organizations such as the Avon Foundation, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, and their vital joint project, the Army of Women, focus on how breast cancer starts in women’s bodies and on identifying ways to combat the genetic and environmental factors that increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

If you would like to donate to breast cancer research visit the Humane Seal, which provides a list of charities by type and location that have received the Humane Charity Seal of Approval for using alternatives to animal testing.

Please also take a minute to ask organizations working on breast cancer research to use innovative and humane research methods that don’t involve the use of animals.

so those animals died..... for nothing?
they should use other alternatives in finding a cure without taking one's life. an animal is not born for humans to experiment on them

there's no need for animal testing. not now, not ever. I don't care what we believe will 'save' us. a life for a life does NOT equal justice.
you can't torture and kill a thousand animals in hopes to save some humans. that would be hippocritical.

Ainsley, watch some of these videos and get back with me. Scroll down. You'll find them. But then I suppose the videos are lying.

Animal experimentation is an outdated useless practice. Stop this now!As a health care professional I advise that this is useless and disgraceful.

Testing on animals as we all know can kill humans! So why are we still doing it? I suspect it has something to do with money.

look i am a retired medical researcher for 40 years and an animal lover. we resort to animal experimentation not because we are cruel but as a last resort because we want to save humans from suffering. we use other systems where we can but where we have to use animals we do treat them ethically with dignity otherwise our experiments dont get past the animal ethics committee. re those who quote the bible, animals for over 2000 years were used for sacrifice for the expiation of sin in the old testamant-their blood was spilt on the mercy seat and altar. and it was commanded by God himself who is love. with Christ's sacrifice of his own precious blood 2000 years ago on calvary, animal sacrifices were no longer needed.
