The race to replace Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has finished its first step, as the filing deadline has passed for candidates to declare they will run.
According to Roll Call, the Democratic side is set, with Gifford’s former director Ron Barber being the only candidate to file. Barber, who was wounded during the assassination attempt that kept Giffords out of Congress for a year before she announced her retirement, is expected to have full support from the party after announcing she asked him specifically to run for her seat.
Less clear is who will be the Republican challenger. Four candidates have filed paperwork, and their background is fairly mixed. One is a former state senator, two are military veterans, and one is a sports broadcaster.
Of the four, only one is female.
The Republicans will compete in a primary on April 17th, and the winner will face off against Barber on June 12th.
