Care2 Interview With Jeanne Rizzo of Breast Cancer Fund

Heather Holdridge, Care2
Care2 has worked closely with the Breast Cancer Fund for many years. Recently, Care2's Heather Holdridge had a chance to sit down with Jeanne Rizzo, the President and CEO of the Breast Cancer Fund, to learn more about BCF's approach to ending the epidemic of breast cancer, which is killing more than 40,000 women per year. They particularly discuss BCF's focus on environmental causes of breast cancer.

Part two of my comment (from below):
...shown to be safe (and even beneficial to the heart) in animals has gone on to cause as many as 140,000 heart attacks and strokes in people. This drug has now been withdrawn from the market. It is also worth noting that when a pharmaceutical company is taken to court concerning the serious or even fatal side-effects of one of its drugs, it is permitted for them to use the arguement that its animal-based research data of the drug does not automatically translate into the same results being duplicated in humans.
When I hear back from the BCF regarding whether or not they commission or fund animal-based research, I will let everyone know.

"Carole essentially your saying that if BCF uses shared data from other animal research, then that's OK? That does not change the fact animals were used in the study at all."
I am not, and did not say that, Bill. Please do not put words in my mouth. My initial post was to ask if anyone knew if the Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) commissions or funds medical research using animals. I am awaiting a response from them.
As I suspect you are already aware, at the current time, it is a legal requirement that drugs are tested on animals. Any data that is obtained through this testing, and other animal studies, can be used by anyone, including the BCF, if they so choose. Earlier in this thread, I pointed out that your link from BFC's website conceded that "In the absence of adequate data on humans", the The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization recommended the use of animal-based data. That doesn't mean they feel the situation is ideal. I also said such a remark made for the arguement that more human-based studies of environmental effects would be appropriate.
Data that comes from animal-based research tells you only the effect on the animal species being used, NOT of any human effect.
It is not until a drug goes to human trials that the effect on humans becomes apparent. Take Vioxx as an example of how animal-based data is unreliable as a model for humans. This drug was shown to be safe (and even beneficial to the heart) in animals

You will stay in control of your health if you do your homework, keep yourself informed, and implement what you learn.

Just last month, a highly effective remedy was re-discovered in Canada. Copy and paste this URL and see why it's probably not going to go anywhere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVTaJn1dMrs&feature=player_embedded

....that's one reason why effective cancer remedies and prevention methods remain little known.

I agree. Healthy people are not profitable for AMA and Big Pharma.

Cancer is not a sickness. It develops in your body because you ARE sick.

I am getting very suspicious of the current paradigm of funding for finding cancer cures. Bluntly put... a cure for cancer, any cancer, IN NOT PROFITABLE, and this is why there will never be a cure for cancer under the current paradigm.
We need to rethink everything about cancer re-$earch.

I agree with needed medical research and I agree with doing the least amount possible. If a facility shares information with another research or data facility they are essentially partners in a goal to end the disease regardless.
The fact sheet is Myth and Facts About Biomonitoring; they monitor biologic life's responses to environmental toxins, be it thru the mouse that is exposed, the eggs of a wild bird or testing human milk to see barrier crosses using all data they support as science worthy.
This becomes like the words "cruelty free" or "not tested" on cosmetics, all that is, is marketing. There is no cosmetic you do not make or is not edible that at some point it's ingredients were tested, all stabilizing agents have been tested on animals.. The words are used to sell the product. Any cosmetic company can have all the testing the wish done by a lab, and since they did not do the actual testing label it cruelty free.
BCF is a worthy group.
