Today Is Equal Pay Day

Equal Pay Day is the day when the average woman’s salary finally catches up with those paid to the average man in 2008. That's right ladies and gentlemen, you're daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and female cousins are making less on average than you're sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and male cousins. In fact, they are making an average of almost four months less salary per year. That's why we don't say "Happy Equal Pay Day!" It's not really a reason to celebrate. That's why Care2 is making Equal Pay Day the Care2 Daily Action and joining the Nation Women's Law Center effort to blog about Equal Pay Day.

- 13 percent of households in the U.S. are women-headed households with children. Pay equity is the single most important way we can fight child poverty in this country.
- More than forty years after Congress outlawed wage discrimination based on sex, women continue to make an average of 78 cents for every dollar paid to men.
- African-American women are paid 63 cents for every dollar paid to white men.
- Latinas are paid 52 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

why is this inappropriate?
Holy Cow! After reading the men's posts on this topic I see why we are still in danger of being descriminated against. They even create websites now to back up their false information. Such things need to be made illegal. How does one measure the slander created by false accusations and chavanistic standards. I fear for those men someday as the pendullum continues to swing, and their minds are challenged to expand to something besides their tender egos. Equal pay for women! Equal pay for working mothers with families!

SIMPLE FIX
Change the minimum wage laws a bit.
#1 any employer or known same name IE WALL MART---HOME DEPOT MCDONALDS ETC that operates in any other county in the state and or in the nation will pay an increase in the minimum posted wage plus $3.00 per hour increase. Full time employment will be met by an employee that works 30 hours per week instead of the now 40 hours. Overtime will begin at 30 hours per week --- at time and one half.
#2 all other jobs with in that county will stay the same as the posted minimum wage.

It is good that there will be a Equal Pay Day as before it was uneven that men got more than women for the same job, and when tis comes in to play it will provide fairness for women and men that everybody was waiting for.

Lisa Brown, I salute you! In answer to your question as to why this is happening, perhaps we may find a clue in one of this week's news items: for the first time in the 341 yrs that the award has existed, we now have a female Poet Laureate. Given how many great female poets there are and have been, that is extremely pathetic. Clearly, despite gaining political rights and sticking their feet in the proverbial door, women are still not recognized in many fields, and traditional male occupations are still dominated by that gender for the most part. Look at it this way: men have been dominating society for eons, and white males have been dominating society ever since there have been heterosexual white males. It's not surprising that now that non-heterosexual, nonwhite, nonmale groups are slowly gaining equality we have our work cut out for us- we have to make up for eons of macho superiority, and that's no easy task. And how are we supposed to do that when the media still encourages violence and machismo to prove manhood and still parades women as sex objects? To acknowledge women's equal contribution, poor hetero males have to give up their fantasies of dominating women- and until someone reinvents porn, that's not going to happen soon...

This difference in pay baffles me. In the Philippines, women get the exact same salary as men. If they hold the same position, and do the same work, then why not? You do well, you get a commendation and a fast track to promotion. Although with 47% of this countries top-level executives being women, that's a lot of bosses that could raise hell.

As follower of economics one thing has always troubled me about the so-called "wage gap". If one could hire women at only 78 cents on the dollar, why is unemployment not significantly lower for women? Economically speaking, you would expect to see that if the "wage gap" actually existed.

Interestingly, the federal goverment (US Department of Labor) commissioned a very thorough study on this very issue.

To paraphrase the conclusion: Controlling for personal choices in workplace career, time in the workplace, voluntary overtime, etc. It's impossible to assume that any portion of the so-called "wage gap" is attributable to overt discirminatory practices against women (certainly not the often cited 78 cents on the dollar number).
To me anyway, this implies that if women wish to make as much as men, they must choose career decisions which will enhance their pay to a greater degree.

Steven C. Sorry, but what an absolute load of nonsense you are talking. How dare you! Equal respect for men; what does that mean? The abhorrent sexism and lack of respect that men like you continue to show women (that make up half the world's population) constitutes the real problem here. So if you have this appalling attitude, you do not deserve respect from anyone least of all women. Do you understand there is a law; women should be paid the same as men for the same job requiring the same skills. That is the law and there is NO debate here. It is therefore illegal for women not to be paid the same as men. The fact that many women continue after decades to get unequal pay is absolutley disgusting and I am furious. If women are the main wage earner and they have children to feed, how is it right that they get paid so much less than their male counterparts? You and other men like you are STEALING FROM THAT WOMEN AND THEREFORE TAKING THE FOOD OUT OF HER CHILDREN MOUTHS. Please can someone tell me why this is still happening?
