Virtual Animal Shelter

Adopt a homeless pet on the Internet using Petfinder.com’s easy search tool.

Petfinder.com is the internet’s largest virtual animal shelter, representing 32,000 animals in more than 1,800 shelters and rescue groups around the country. The site helps facilitate over half a million adoptions a year.

The easy search tool on Petfinder.com can show you within seconds all the pets meeting your specifications in your local area or around the country. All you need to do is specify the kind of animal you are looking for (cat, dog, horse, etc.), the breed (you can put in mix), the age, size, gender, your zip code and the range within which you are willing to look (national or regional).

It is worth taking a trial run on Petfinder.com. The search should bring up at least half a dozen matches in your area, enough to give you a great starting point. The only danger is falling in love with all the pets you see in the pictures, and having a pit in your stomach that you can’t adopt them all.

I love petfinder, I found my sheltie mix on it! :) He's great and I love him to death. I of course first met him before I decided to adopt him. Like cars, you want to try it out before you buy it. But he was as perfect as can be and I am happy with him.

I refer all my family and friends to it!

Hi I agree with both sides in regard to adopting a stray from Petfinder. One you have to take into account that the animals in shelters are spayed and neutered and have received all their vaccinations and sometimes microchiped. If you were to do this on your own, the price would be three times that you are paying from Petfinder. Besides If you can't afford to adopt an animal you shouldn't have one. I also, believe that there should be more Low Cost spay and neuter clinics available, but these are hard to find because you have to have the ok from your county officials as well as Veternarians that will preform the surgeries for a low cost or volunteering their services. Please, I do encourage people to take the time to check out Petfinder and do price comparisons for the overall cost of the animals needs. They can't speak for themselves, We have to stand up and speak for them. Thank you.

I have a 7 yr old male cairn terrier who I've had from 2 months that I need to find a loving forever home for. I wanted to be his mom forever, and it's killing me emotionally to have to give him up. He is up to date on shots (5/08), neutered and groomed. Vet references are a must. Please e-mail me at gailbeth00@yahoo.com if you are interested in getting an application (yes, I'm going to be picky) and a picture of Oreo. He is black brindle like toto and loves people. He has always been an only pet and would probably do best continuing to be.

i personally think the animals listed on petfinders and all other sites like this all the pets listed on them are way too expensive people are going too look in the paper for cheaper animals which in a way is better it will keep them from going to a shelter! i worked for a shelter until i couldnt stand to take any more lives! instead of advertising for shelters these sites should advertise free spay and neuter clinics. in the long run people would become more responsible pet owners and there would be no more dumping of pets because the shelters charge to take unwanted pets and there would be no more of looking into those pleading eyes and adminstering that fatal shot and listening to the heart eventually stop beating! if these shelters want to go out of business offer free spays!!!

i LOVE petfinder! it helped me decide where to get my new kitten from. I got to see pictures and read a blurb about each kitten i was considering!

craigslist is also good for this - just look under pets!

Petfinder rocks, and so do the shelters that post on Petfinder.com. As for adoption fees, for many groups $300. doesn't even begin to cover all of the costs put into helping the pets. From food and care, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping and so forth. If their community will support that adoption fee then good for them, it will allow them to do more.

DONT GET ME WRONG I THINK PETFINDER IS A NICE SIGHT BUT WHEN YOU HAVE MOST OF THE DOGS GOING FOR 300.00 OR MORE BY THE SHELTERS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO EMPTY OUT SHELTERS OTHER THAN BY DEATH LOWER PRICES YOU CAN GET ONE IN THE PAPER FOR 00.00-25.00

Hi, I'm Otis, a terrier mix about 30 loveable lbs. and 3 yrs "young". I was rescued from a puppy mill when I was little and starving. My human mom took me in with 18 others and they have all left for their new homes. I am sad and don't know why no one wants me as I have cute whiskers, red short hair, great personality, and like to ride inside the car or truck with mom. I am neutered, heartworm neg, and have my rabies shot. I don't like other small MALE dogs, but, like to play with friendly big dogs or small female dogs. I am not housebroken, but, smart enough to be trained. Please consider letting me live my life with your kind human children or adults. I am in Rockingham Co, NC and you can call my mom, Betty @ 336-509-5699 and leave a message.
