Make Nuclear Disarmament Part of U.S. National Security Strategy

Speaking in Prague in April 2009, President Obama said, "To put an end to Cold War thinking, we will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy, and urge others to do the same."

President Obama has often repeated this anti-nuclear sentiment, which helped him win the presidential election and the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. However, some nuclear hawks in government want to strengthen our dangerous nuclear arsenal rather than seek nuclear disarmament. In a nod to the hawks, the Obama administration recently proposed $5 billion for enhancing nuclear weapons capabilities over the next five years.

The administration's Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) -- the basis for nuclear policy -- is expected to be completed this month. The NPR presents an unparalleled opportunity to show the world that the United States is serious about disarmament. With the NPR, the president has the chance to cement his vision of a world free of nuclear weapons into U.S. security policy.
