Los Angeles Expo 2020

The World's Fair is the 3rd largest international event to take place after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. Many Americans don't know of the World’s Fair, given that the last American World’s Fair was in 1984. The World’s Fair is an event that promotes technology, culture, and harmony.

It is time for the United States to host another World’s Fair and rejoin the world stage in this great venue. Los Angeles is the place for the United States to host the 2020 World’s Fair. Commemorating the 170th anniversary of California statehood and the 240th anniversary of the founding of Los Angeles, a world's fair in Los Angeles in 2020 would be a very special and important event.

For all that the world's fairs represent and are, it is imperative that the United States becomes involved again. On April 4th, 2006, the Secretary General of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) wrote, "It would be wonderful to, once again, attend an Exhibition in the United States."The 2020 World’s Fair in Los Angeles would be a historic event, and would be a boon and a source of great pride for Los Angeles, California, and the United States of America.

Dear Senate Foreign Relations Committee,

We the undersigned agree that it is time the United States become actively involved in the great venue that is the world's fair by hosting an American World's Fair. The world's fair movement has had an important impact on the United States as well as the world. For 150 years, the world's fair has introduced us to new technologies, promoted culture and harmony, and awed and inspired hundreds of millions of visitors here in the U.S. and abroad.

2020 is the next opportunity for the United States to host a world's fair, and with your approval this bid could potentially lead to the first American world's fair in nearly 40 years. Los Angeles is the perfect place to host this new fair in 2020. Commemorating the 170th anniversary of the Great State of California as well as the 240th anniversary of the founding of the City of Los Angeles, the 2020 Los Angeles World's Fair will be a very important event for Los Angeles, California, and the United States of America.

We feel that greater U.S. involvement would be beneficial to the United States, sparking interest at home of culture, science, and technology. Additionally, the economic impact of tens of millions of tourists from around the world visiting the United States would be a boon to our economy. The construction of such a fair would additionally employ thousands upon thousands of unemployed Americans, and would improve our infrastructure, which desperately needs improving. To facilitate the United States to host a world's fair in 2020, we ask the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to:

  • -- Have the U.S. become a member state of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE), of which there are currently 157 member states

  • -- Allow federal funding to be used for World's Fairs and their pavilions

  • -- Re-instate a World's Fair Department to be in charge of U.S. World's Fairs and pavilions and the U.S. relationship with the BIE

  • -- Promote the idea of a World's Fair in the United States in 2020

There is great support for the United States to host a world's fair. A 2020 American World's Fair would be a truly historic event and is an opportunity that the United States simply cannot pass. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We all eagerly look forward to hearing of the United States' renewed interest in the world's fair movement as a potential host for the 2020 World's Fair, realizing the enormous positive impact such a fair could have on city, state, and country.

Sincerely,
