Instagram: Don't Sell Us Out, Or We're Walking Out

Like many other social networks, Instagram started out with good will. Through its app, millions of people have been able to run their photos through its fun and beautiful photo filters. In return, we as a community have been there for the Instagram team every step of the way as they built up Instragram - through all the glitches and down time.

So it was incredibly upsetting to receive Instagram's new Terms of Service, which claims "a business or other entity may pay" Instagram for our images without any compensation or notification to us.

They quickly backtracked, saying that they would review their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, but we still have no assurance that they are going to protect our photo rights and not sell us out. So we must keep the pressure on Instagram to make sure they do the right thing with their as-yet-unreleased new Terms of Service.

We understand that as Instagram scales, it needs to support a larger infrastructure and therefore needs to adapt its business model to make it profitable. But selling out the community, who supported and helped build them up, is a slap in the face to us users. And we will not tolerate it.

Tell Instagram: don't sell out your community for the sake of a profit! Re-examine the new Terms of Service that says you have the right to sell our photos.
Dear Instagram,

Like many other social networks, you started out with such good will. Your vision to bring friends and total strangers together who share a love for documenting the biggest and smallest moments in our lives through photography was inspiring and useful to people like us. Through your app, millions of people have been able to run their photos through your fun and beautiful photo filters, and share them with friends, family, and across social networks like Twitter, FB, and Flickr.

The community has been there for you every step of the way as you built up Instragram - through all the glitches and down time. We have provided you with thoughtful suggestions on how to improve Instagram, because we believed in you. And you implemented many of those suggestions, which helped to make Instagram such a success today. So you can imagine how upsetting it was to receive your new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, a bait-and-switch that claims "a business or other entity may pay" Instagram for our images without any compensation or notification to us.

We understand that as you scale, you need to support a larger infrastructure and therefore need to adapt your business model to make it profitable. But selling out the community, who supported and helped build you up, is a slap in the face to us users. And we will not tolerate it. While we appreciate you responding to the communities outrage so quickly, we demand that when you review your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service that you will update them and stick to your promise of protecting our photo rights and not sell them without our permission and with no compensation.

If you insist on selling us out with the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, we will take our photos off of Instagram and delete our account before January 16th and use alternative photo sharing sites like Flickr who respect their users.
