Tell John Boehner and the GOP to Extend Unemployment Insurance

Since House Republicans failed to extend unemployment benefits last year, 1.3 million jobless Americans have been stripped of the emergency benefits they earned while they were working. Another 3.5 million will be stripped of benefits by the end of the year.

On average, it takes roughly 37 weeks for people under 45 to find a new job. For people over 45, that number jumps to 45 weeks. According to the Congressional budget Office, a Democratic proposal to save expiring unemployment benefits would provide a boost to the economy with 200,000 more jobs.

Congressional Republicans' refusal to extend unemployment benefits is just the latest example of how the GOP is out of touch with all but the wealthiest Americans. We can’t afford to let Republicans strip away the benefits that are critical to millions of American families in tough times.

Tell John Boehner and Congressional Republicans to extend unemployment benefits today.
Dear [Decision Maker],

We are writing to strongly support S. 2148, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2014, and to urge you to press for passage of this critical bill. S. 2148 will provide much needed economic support for millions of Americans still struggling to find their footing after years of recession and job loss.

We recognize how critically important this is to the long-term unemployed, and it is something states can, and ours certainly will, do.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
