Recall Mayor Janice Daniels for Anti-Gay Slurs

  • by: Jennifer P.
  • recipient: Oakland County Election Commission
Janice Daniels, mayor of Troy, Michigan, posted a status update to her personal Facebook page that reads, "I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there." When the post went viral, Daniels was unapologetic, reaffirming that "marriage should be between one man and one woman."

Sign this petition to send a clear message that homophobic slurs are unacceptable and call for the recall of Mayor Janice Daniels.

Troy is a large and diverse community, and Daniels' comments are an insult to its gay residents and show a disregard for violence and discrimination committed against gay people. Although Equality Michigan has called on Mayor Daniels to apologize for her shameful statements and to endorse an ordinance that would protect gay residents of Troy, Daniels has dismissed public outcry.

Sign now to urge the Oakland County Election Commission to begin the recall process for Mayor Daniels, who shows no remorse for using anti-gay slurs.
We the undersigned urge you to begin the recall process for Mayor Janice Daniels, who shows no remorse for using anti-gay slurs. After posting a status update to her personal Facebook page that insults "queers," public outcry demanded an apology from Daniels. However, she remains unapologetic, and her comments show blatant disregard for violence and discrimination committed against gay people. Because Daniels has dismissed her responsibility for using anti-gay slurs, we ask you to conduct a hearing to begin the recall process for Mayor Daniels.
