Save the Wild Donkeys of Inagua (Bahamas) from Extinction

Once an important part of Inagua culture, the Inagua Wild Donkeys are in danger of being hunted to extinction.  Please sign this petition to support our Wild Donkeys being added to the schedule of animals protected under the Wild Animals Protection Act.

Sadly, local hunters began hunting the donkeys and orphaned foals were left to perish beginning the decline of these animals that had become part of the local landscape. Just as the wild horses in Abaco have been allowed to perish, this too may happen to the donkeys without formal protection. Additionally the carcasses are carelessly discarded by hunters creating a health hazard and a visually distressing sight.

Dear Minister Dorsett,

We the undersigned plead to you to act with haste to Protect the Wild Donkeys of Inagua by adding them to the schedule of animals protected under the Wild Animals Protection Act.

Once an important part of Inagua culture, the Inagua Wild Donkeys are in danger of being hunted to extinction. The colourful Wild Donkeys of Inagua have long been an exciting sight for visitors to the island.  The Donkeys were introduced to the island in the 1700's, and were once used for transportation and to carry salt from the evaporators to the boats for shipment to the mainland. Motorized vehicles eventually replaced donkey transport and the animals were released into the wild where they roamed free and gradually adapted to surviving in the harsh Inagua landscape.
