Protect Montana Wolves and Cancel the 2011 Wolf Hunt

Sign the attached petition and let [your state representative] know that you want the wolves in Montana to be put back on the Endangered Species List and that you want wolves to be given state and federal protection that will include the immediate cancellation of the 2011 wolf hunt.
The 2011 scheduled Montana Wolf Hunting Season must be cancelled now as the slaughter of at least 220 wolves will have a devastating effect on the balance of wildlife in our state.  Wolves are essential to our ecosystem because they control the population of smaller predators, share food with other creatures, and eliminate weak, diseased animals, thus guaranteeing a healthy selection of available game.  Montana elk have maintained a sustainable population as they coexist with wolf packs and other predators and there are currently an estimated 150,000 elk in Montana.  That is the same amount of elk that was available in 2010.  Although there is some depredation of livestock by wolves in Montana, only 1% of livestock in the U.S. are actually killed by wolves.  Montana ranchers are currently being reimbursed for their losses.  Without diversity of wildlife in Montana, the Tourism Industry will suffer and that will have a negative effect on Montana's economy.  The Federal Government has invested a lot of money in the Wolf Reintroduction Program and it would be wrong to reduce the number of wolves to unsustainable numbers. It is imperative that wolves be immediately returned to the Endangered Species List and be given state and federal protection.
