Walmart: Stop Discriminating Against Pregnant Women!

Walmart changed its disability policy last month to cover pregnant workers following pressure from women's rights activists, but the company is still finding ways to discriminate against pregnant women.

Candace Higgins had been working at Walmart since June 2013 and became pregnant in September. She was fine for the first few months, but began feeling ill starting in February. Her job duties included lifting heavy objects and working with harsh chemicals, all of which is dangerous for a pregnant woman and her fetus. But when Candace requested cashier work that wouldn't force her to lift heavy objects and put stress on her baby, Walmart refused -- even though they were hiring new cashiers. Candace became so sick she had to go to the hospital several times, but instead of helping Candace get better work conditions Walmart fired her.

Other pregnant woman working with Candace suffered a similar fate and are now new mothers with no income to support them. Please sign the petition to urge Walmart to stop discriminating against pregnant workers!

We are concerned with Walmart's continued treatment of pregnant woman, despite the company's recent changes to its disability policy.

Worker Candace Higgins had been working at Walmart since June 2013 and became pregnant in September. She was fine for the first few months, but began feeling ill starting in February. Her job duties included lifting heavy objects and working with harsh chemicals, all of which is dangerous for a pregnant woman and her fetus. Yet Higgins' repeated requests for lighter cashier work were refused while the company continued hiring new cashiers. Illness related to her pregnancy and possibly her work condition landed her in the hospital several times, and Walmart fired her in May.

Other pregnant woman working with Higgins suffered a similar fate and are now faced with new babies but no income to support them. We respectfully urge you to change your policies to better accomodate pregnant workers without doing harm to their health or the health of their fetuses. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
