Protect seahorses in Cambodia from dynamite fishing

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to save the seahorses from being snared in fishing nets off the coasts of Cambodia, cutting their populations in half, subjecting them to extinction. We need to encourage the local governments of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to create a marine protection zone that would drastically save the seahorses.

Seahorses are a beautiful, necessary component for the environment, presenting a healthy population. Now the numbers have declined by about half.  This is predominantly due to the fishing boats from Thailand and Vietnam dropping their weighted trawling nets on the seabed, catching anything in its path.

Cambodia is home to at least seven beautiful seahorses among the 53 that exist worldwide.  However, a visitor to the area witnessed firsthand the sorrowing effects of trawling.  Another culprit responsible for the loss and extinction of many seahorses is due to fishing with dynamite. This visitor decided to engage in the first Marine Conservation of Cambodia (MCC) in an effort to save these beautiful creatures in danger. The objective of the group is to try and keep the seahorses from disappearing and encourages marine conservation in general.  Problem is that local villagers do not always cooperate, fishing with their weighted nets and dynamite.

The MCC is working diligently with the Cambodian government in an effort to enforce more stringent laws regarding fishing policies. The areas subjected are patrolled on a regular basis to stop the destruction of the seabed and harm the seahorse population. Although there have been some improvements in this project to protect the seahorses, we need to encourage the Cambodian government to get more involved.

Cambodian Government and Fisheries Administration – Please stop putting the seahorse population in jeopardy with your current weighted net and dynamite fishing practices.  These procedures are causing a drastic decline in the seahorse population, near to the point of extinction.  Consider enforcing stricter laws and policies and create a marine protection zone so that the seahorses are no longer endangered.
