Saguaro (pronounced "sue ARE oh") cactus and Palo Verde trees are silhouetted by a beautiful desert sunset. As the last rays of daylight disappear below the horizon, the desert floor comes alive with insects, mammals and birds that have spent the day resting out of sight from the hot day sun. Saguaro National Park is one of the few remaining areas where the giant cactus remains plentiful. These cactus, which may reach 50 feet (15 meters) tall and live for 250 years, produce upwards of 40 million seeds during a lifetime; yet on average only one seedling will reach maturity.
