The Allen Neighborhood Center has changed my life. I didn't know what my life was even about until I met the great people there and began to understand the importance of community and investing not only money but energy and love locally. I couldn't be happier. The Allen Neighborhood Center deserves everything there is to offer.

Allen Neighborhood Center has been such a gathering place for all in our area of Lansing as well as people that come from outside the neighborhood due to the beautiful supply of organic fruits/vegies as well as all of the wonderful plants, soaps, apple butter....you name....Allen Neighborhood's Farmer's Market has got it! The hours are great for those who work an 8-5 job, the parking is convenient and free, and the vendors are fantastic. It's so nice to live in the city and be able to pick up fresh food for dinner....right from the farmer who grew it!

This place provides so much for the people around the area. They not only let their youth actually harvest food but also sell it in their local food market days. What a great way of bringing the entire community together!

I am an agricultural student at Michigan State University. I went searching for a local volunteer opportunity to give me a little experience of life outside the campus. I met the direct of the Allen Neighborhood Center, Joan Nelson, who's great energy immediately made me want to be a part of whatever she was doing. Joan hooked me up with other volunteers at the center and before I knew it, I was an intern for their newly constructed community green house called "The Hunter Park Gardenhouse." Now, I am working a summer internship at a local organic farm (featuring a CSA program) that sets up at the Allen Street Farmers Market every Wednesday. I am there every Wednesday distributing the farms produce to our CSA members and experiencing the healthy change that the Lansing's Eastside is going through because of the Allen Neighborhood Center and its many outreach programs such as the farmers market and the community greenhouse/garden. Thanks! -The best from Lansing, Michigan!

ANC transforms its simple parking lot every Wednesday to become a hub of neighborhood connectivity and local support. The farmers market brightens the area with a great selection of produce and more-- you can also sign up for health programs and receive neighborhood information while you visit the farm market.

This market CARES about its neighborhood and the role it plays in the city. It's not just the great fresh produce, handmade baked good, organic meats, diverse perennials, etc.-- all presented with a smile and good advice by local farmers and vendors-- but the overarching commitment to healthy living created, fostered, and promoted by the marvelous Allen Neighborhood Center. The ANC and all its programs are a model for positive urban citizenship.

Unlike other farmers markets I have been to, the Allen St. market understands itself as an important community outreach program -- not merely a place for the relatively well-off to buy local and organic produce. Local, sustained agriculture is essential but, so, too, is building community links across traditional interest and class divisions and finding constructive ways of renewing this country's urban areas. The Allen Street Market deserves support and greater publicity because it is a model for the future.

Allen Neighborhood Center was the first farmers market in the State of Michigan to accept food stamp payments. They have the best entertainment, using local talent. They have the most organic farmer offerings. They offer their own "token" money system. And they are the most creative team of workers. In Ingham County, and Mid-Michigan -- they rule!

Lansing's Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC) is a treasured jewel two blocks from my house. Not only do they provide great community programs, but a fabulous farmer's market that continues to grow each year. Each Wednesday is an opportunity to meet up with friends, win cool (and healthy) prizes for answering health related questions, listen to live local music, sample different recipes using local food and talk to the farmer who grew your week's groceries. The ANC Farmer's Market was also the first non-profit in Michigan to be authorized for the use of EBT money (food stamps). ANC has always been focused on the health of the neighborhood, but good health is beyond education workshops and signing residents up for the Ingham County Health Plan. ANC has successfully combined the need to access healthy food while also providing a marketing opportunity for small local farmers. While this article is a little outdated (ANC has had their market in full swing for about 5 years now), it is a great summary of ANC's Farmer's Market and other healthy initiatives. http://www.communityvoices.org/Article.aspx?ID=356 ANC is the heartbeat of Lansing's eastside and continues to grow its healthy efforts. It's true - good health is contagious and the ANC Farmer's Market is dishing it up!

The Allen Neighborhood Center is the best example I know of, of local people working hard, year in and year out, to create urban community. You are the glue that makes your neighborhood a great place to live. Thank you for all you do.

My wife and I live just a couple blocks from the ANC market. We walk down every Wednesday for fresh produce and to interact with all the great neighbors on the Eastside. It's always a mid-week highlight!

I like allen st market because it is full of liberals who don't bathe, the women don't shave. Nothing says fresh food as well as stinky unshaved hippie chicks. When I have bought fruit or veggies there, they have been moldy by the time I get home, mm mm that's good eating.

They were the first market to accept EBT/food stamps in the state! There are many wonderful, friendly, hard working farmers with delicious local produce. I can and do walk or bike there every week. I love chatting with everyone there- it's really a hub of the community.

I love the fact that they are making whole, local food available in a neighborhood that is primarily served by convience and liquor stores, especially the fact that they accept food stamps and debit cards. And of course the wonderful fresh produce, locally baked bread, and friendly people are a big plus as well.

It brings good, healthy food into a part of the city that is a "food desert" -- no markets except convenience stores -- and they did all the paperwork so folks can use food stamps there, and set up a system so they can use them without being embarrassed.

Wonderful fresh food, great atmosphere and some of the friendliest people I know. Fantastic variety of vendors. And they also have kids activities. This allows me to shop without interruption, yet they are nearby so I can still keep an eye on them.

I do not live in the Allen St. neighborhood, yet I always meet up with at least one person at the market that I know -- often several people! This attests to it's wide-spread popularity, not just with the neighborhood it inhabits, but with an entire quadrant of the city. Sometimes I visit even if I don't really need to buy anything! (Though I never come away empty-handed.) The best small market around!

The Allen Street Market has brought wonderfully fresh, locally grown produce to an area in the city where it would normally not be found. The market supports healthy eating and living for everyone, and makes it easily accessible and affordable. It has helped to unite the community and has created a great sense a pride in the neighborhood. It is an amazing resource and every week during the summer I look forward to a visit!

Allen Neighborhood Center fosters a genuinely tight sense of community throughout the east side (of Lansing), and they run several programs for low-income youth and their families. Plus their farmer's market is within walking distance of The Green Door and Dagwood's.

They are a wonderful resource for the community. The market started because of the real need for food security in the neighborhood and has grown into the nicest farmer's market in the Lansing area!
