Thanks to the notifucations I recieved, via e-mail, from an incomparable man, Mr. Andy M., My first vist to the Orleans Farmers Mkt was most gratifying! Hussle- Bussle does not exist there; there's plenty to do, lots of safe parking, nice folks everywhere, who like to have real conversations! And plenty of charning country hospitality, enfused with splendid Amish sensibility, Talent abounds, from the artesan crowd. All of this makes the trip quite meaningful. Additionally, the vegetables are exceptional and prices are very reasonable. And there are lots of other shops to stroll to in the town square, where i found groovy antiques. dmm .

My Orange County harvest is superb to a degree that is almost embarrassingly superior to that of any other market in the country and South Carolina (arguably not of this country). And, that harvest was achieved a short 44 years ago. Participation in that ripening process has been and continues to be delightful. Sprouted in nearby Leipsic--recreated in Pumpkin Center, and fine-tuned in Orleans. Oh, what a market--Oh, what a night!

"HomeGrown" is the quintessential model for providing a wholesome space for folks to sell and buy vitalizing foods, share down home music and stories, and exchange information. A lively community happening! I treasure my delicious childhood memories of the South Bend (IN) farmers market on Saturday mornings, and wish that for kids of all ages.

Orange County, Indiana has a beautiful, ALL-VOLUNTEER farmers market every Saturday morning on the town square in Orleans (population 2273). It's founders started it, in part, to show the community that environmental activists and organizers are FOR something. The market has grown to feature more than 75 vendors all of whom make, grow, or produce what they sell and venders include many old order Amish. In addition to the food for sale, the market offers a music jammers tent, cooking demos a buck-a-book trailer with a couple thousand used books each of which can be bought for a buck, proceeds from which help fund the market. There are also a great variety of activities and special events. Not only does the market provide nutritious, locally grown food, but a social resource for this rural area.

Farmers markets promote (and sell in most cases) locally grown food. These markets are experiencing a renaissance across the country as awareness of the need to create and maintain sustainable environments and economies becomes more widely accepted. This is amazing!!! and it is built from the ground up, with only local people. When locals are the only ones involved, you can bet, it's the BEST. Thank you all for setting an example, just what small communities can accomplish.

The enormous diversity of people and produce at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market reflect Indiana's reputation as "The Crossroads of America". Here you see fresh herbs alongside orchard apples and Amish buggies along Ford F-150s. A slice of Americana that's not to be missed!

It gives us a chance to get good fresh veg that come locally that hasnt been shipped in sitting in a semi trailer or warehouse for a week or so. Alos the fact that crafts are offered gives people a chance to show off their talents and unique skills. Out of the four that are within decent driving distance the farmers market in Orleans Indiana is truly the best!

The Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market is a picture of cultural diversity with a hearty helping of Hoosier Hospitality. Amish buggies parked along side pick up trucks. Fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods and handmade items line the sidewalk of the park-like town square as musicians gather and provide a melodic background. We have sold products at other farmers Markets in the Louisville Ky, Jeffersonville In area and in researching market sites, found heavy cutomer traffic, knowledgable consumers, and a parklike atmosphere were very important to us. The ones we found that met this criteria were packed to the gills, and left little room to casually peruse the booths. After visiting the Orleans farmers market we found all of what we were looking for as a seller much less as a consumer. We were very happy with the organic selections available, and the many Amish wagon booths reminded me of the old Haymarket in downtown Louisville. Admittedly, we (my wife and I) know a producer or two at this market, and the history of how it came to be so popular in recent years. Brambleberry Farmers Darren and Esprit are some of the most genuine, dedicated, and committed people to Sustainable Agriculture we know. Just ask them about permaculture and it's integration to their farm? Their vast knowledge on the subject wiil amaze you. Most importantly, Orleans market serves it's locals unbelievably well, being a small community with a limited customer base. This is small town America at it's best. You owe it to yourself to venture out here at least once during the season.

The Orleans Farmers Market not only has fresh produce and home-made craft items, it is in the middle of a beautiful town square with plenty of grass for the kids to play, live music for all to share, and trees for shade. It is convenient to the local businesses in the small town, and convenient to the surrounding communities. The people at this Farmer's Market work very hard to promote what they do and to educate their neighbors about buying locally. Plus, there are so many good neighbors and friendly faces to meet there!

I still call Orleans my 'home town' and visit my parents and sisters there often. I've had the opportunity to visit the 'market' with my sister and think it is wonderful to see all the local vendors display their 'homegrown' veggies, listen to some good music and get to see some old friends-----I have a lovely pair of earrings purchsed there and receive complements on them often and get the chance to share what it is truly like to grow up in the 'greatest little community' in all of southern Indiana. And by the way, my sister gets fresh flowers each week from the Farmers Mkt., thanks Tony!!!!! Hats off to the OCHGFM------from North Carolina

There are some many great things about this farmers market, it's hard to know where to start! Of course, there is plenty of fresh, locally grown produce to choose from, uniquely handcrafted items, plenty of parking, music, Amish produce and products, friendly vendors, family-friendly oriented, a beautiful park for the kids to play in while the parents shop, books galore at Buck-A-Book. I must point out the outstanding quality of organization that goes into this venure each and every week. Without organization and leadership, nothing truly great can come from anything, and this farmers market has been blessed with just that. The wonderful volunteers that help to put this on each week deserves a huge round of applause!

I grew up in Orleans...it was my "hometown" for 22 yrs. I dearly loved SO many of the folks there in my formative years...they were wonderful to be around...wonderful influences upon the rest of my life. I remain deeply indebted to those special people that I still know there (some are close relatives, some are "chosen" family)..and I wish for them and the sake of my beloved home town to be honored and recognized for their wonderful Farmers Market. I still receive the Progress Examiner every week...and read about the terrific fresh produce and crowds that come from all around. Even from a distance, I remain very proud of my hometown and this wonderful OCHFM that many are blessed to visit and benefit from. The proud farmers and supporters of this market are very deserving of the special recognition and hopefully the $5000 prize! God bless you all!

Though I live in Iowa, not Indiana, I have best friends very connected to local and environmental causes who think the world of Orange County HomeGrown. We support our own Iowa City farmer's market, but I sense that Orange County's is more genuinely communal -- though of course that may say more about our Indiana friends than about the markets! Still, hats off to Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market indeed...

In an age of "fast-paced living" and not always being sure where my food is coming from, I cherish strolling around and frequenting the vendors at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market. I had visited this market a little while back while in town for a permaculture course on Lazy Black Bear Ranch. This market was the freshest I had ever been to and I have been to quite a few here in Illinois. This market is one symbol capturing the very progressive movement that is happening in Orange County. During the permaculture course we focused very much on the design aspects of the market. I give the Orange County Home Grown Farmers Market a big thumbs up!

I support the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market because it is unique to the area, and it truly supports the little guy, the little farmer. Not only can you buy fresh produce, you can also visit with your neighbors and friends, and be entertained. Most importantly it provides a network for the community, and this is especially important for small communities in southern Indiana! This is a little different. Here in Orange County, Indiana, we have a beautiful, all volunteer farmers market every Saturday morning on the town square in Orleans (population 2273), with more than 75 vendors -- including many old order Amish -- all of whom make, grow, or produce what they sell. We have a regular music jammers tent, cooking demos and a great variety of activities and special events, and a buck-a-book trailer with a couple thousand used books each of which can be bought for a buck, proceeds from which help fund the market.

It's a new market in a small town that formerly had to rely on produce by afar and now has plenty of local produce--the market has grown so fast, with so many vendors, that it provides evidence of the true need for farmer's markets--and of the marvelous saying, "If you build it, they will come."

I love the Paoli area with its natural beauty and smalltown charm. The Farmers Market is a vital, generative community happening. Not only do we all benefit from the availability of wholesome, locally produced food from folk we can know personally, but the weekly gathering itself enriches relationships among neighbors, producers, tourists; generates income and livelihood; offers learning opportunities and supports cultural creative expression. The scope of its offerings is exceptional for such a small and relatively isolated locale. One imagines the per capita benefit matches or exceeds that of larger operations. One would hate to imagine Paoli without it.

While I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan now, I grew up in Southern Indiana. Orelans farmers' market should win because it exemplifies that farmers markets on not just for big cities or college towns. The movement towards healthier food and a healthier planet must be inclusive and move towards growers and consumers who don't have the same access. The Orleans farmers market sells great food and builds community with its market

While visiting relatives in Indiana (we are from Pittsburgh, PA) they insisted on taking us to the Orleans farmers market and I'm SO glad that they did! It was fantastic- there was a group of musicians playing which added to the charm of the event. And we were very impressed with many of the venders- we purchased several beautifully carved wooden bowls (for ourselves and as gifts!), a few decorations for our yard and various other treasures and treats. There was definitely something for everyone!! Thank you for offering such a wonderful event!

The Orange County Farmers Market is in the small town of Orleans. Bigger towns that are nearby simply cannot compete because of the variety of vendors, the number of vendors, including Amish farmers and their families. There are demonstrations of cooking, activities for children, a trailer full of books to buy for a buck, music jammers who play for their enjoyment and that of the crowd and yoga lessons early in the morning. This market in the little town of Orleans has a wonderful community flavor and ambience. It is wonderful.

The market is a great venue for local gardeners and farmers to display their home-grown veggies, fruits, meats, crafts and baked goods. The direct sale from producer to user assures freshness and gives a better reward to the seller. They get the whole sale price but they also get the feed-back from the purchaser. Often the kudos and gratitude received are as important as positive reinforcement for your labor as the monetary gain.

We just moved to the Orange/Lawrence County area last summer and the first place our neighbors told us to check out was the Orange County Market in Orleans. We did visit on our first Saturday in our new hometown and have taken every summer visitor we've had to the Market! We just really enjoy this gathering, strolling, buying place and are so proud to show old friends what our new place has to offer!

The Orleans market is something wonderful to do each Saturday morning. You can meet and catch up with friends, listen to, sing and play great, fun music, pick up the freshest vegetables and fruits, watch real hotel chefs create and offer samples of their cooking and that's just one of many events and activities offered. Who wants to sleep in and drink coffee till noon on Saturdays? Not me. I don't want to miss "The Market."

I support the Orange County Market because they are varied in their choice of foods, gifts, books, jewelry, plants, flowers, crafts, music, games and more. They have worked very hard to build this market to the size it is and an interest for everyone regardless of age or sex in only a few years. They deserve to win because of their community coming together to build this market to its present size and variety.

The variety of vendors and items at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market is amazing and a wonderful addition to our community. Organic produce, homemade pastries and breads, art & homemade items, the wonderful people, family & friends old and new is an event to look forward to from week to week. The enthusiasm of the vendors, conversations, the open air outdoors social event has made Orange County a truly exciting place for residents and visitors alike. The Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market is both old world and new vision in the right direction for people to know where their consumer goods, especially food comes from and to feel more and more connected to the whole process of wellness. A true sense of community, Orange County HOmeGrown is No. 1 in my interpretations. I would like to say I am very contented to be part of this community and look forward to continued success for the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market. Music, Buck-a-book, cooking, all the workshops and demonstrations add to this exciting experience. Thanks to all the people who make this experience possible. What an awesome adventure we are on!

This is such a great farmer's market--I've been to farmer's markets in large cities that have half the selection and not everything is local and the prices are much higher. Our Farmers Market is a community in itself, comprised of individuals who are proud of their community and their ability to provide safe, economical and healthy food choices to everyone. The market is a place of acceptance and appreciation for everyone and everything. Questions are answered and encouraged. The demonstrations help those who have limited knowledge of food preparation to find ways to utilize the products offered at the market.

It is one of the highlights of our week to visit the Farmers Market in Orleans. The people are friendly, the produce top notch, great atmosphere with local musicians playing, local chefs whipping up something with the fresh produce they have just purchased, crafts, used books, walking club, and baked goods. Anything that rates setting your alarm on a Saturday morning speaks for itself :)

Great place for fresh fruits and veggies. My favorite though are the unique gifts. I've already started my Christmas shopping by purchasing handmade gifts. One special one was a beautiful bowl created from a tree from a local park that was toppled by a storm. What a beautiful gift to remind the family of all the fun times spent under those beautiful trees and to recylce a lost gem. There are always unique things to purchase from rock jewelry, and homemade maple syrup, to handwoven rugs. It is a great place to find fun things that are first quality!

I drive to Orleans rather than attending closer markets in my area. I love all the additional activities they offer throughout the season - from the yoga classes, bluegrass music, . . . to the cooking demos. I also look forward to visiting the book swap. Huge community asset - helping the local economy, building new and small businesses, and building community through events, camaraderie. Just about the coolest thing that happens in Orange County -- hundreds of shoppers each week, 60-70 vendors, all in the one of the poorest counties of the state. It's nearly a miracle each and every Saturday morning.

The market brings the community together young and old. With the computer age reducing public gatherings, it rekindles the spirit of small town values and traditions. It is a safe place for children to roam, play and sample good home cooking and values. It gives the local community a reason to get out of bed early Saturday morning to purchase fresh produce and baked goods, by a locally handcrafted item for a gift or for themselves and visit with their old friends and make new friends. This generation spends too much time isolated behind a computer screen and needs farmers markets to return to earth.

It is not a large market, but you can find anything you want there, and the vendors are all so friendly. There is quite a bit of shade and it is just a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning. You see alot of old friends, and the Farmer's Market Jammers provide music for all, there is free coffee, and cinnamon rolls, muffins and more available from the vendors, so you can enjoy a light breakfast and sit and enjoy the morning with friends, I make new friends every week, and it is one of the highlights of my week. I have an eldery friend that comes every week and I believe it is one of his few social event each week. It does my heart so much good to see him each week. Every week the Jammers play his favorite hymn and his late wife's favorite hymn, and I know he is having alot of happy memories, and keeping in contact with people. We also do cards each week for vendors or regular customer whom are ill or having crisises in their families, It is as though we are a big family. My husband and I have been doing all of our gardening at the market since it opened a few years ago. With just the 2 of us we no longer keep a garden and are not really able to, but we can still have fresh produce and eggs all summer long. Just Love It!!!

The Orange County HomeGrown Farmer's Market is the epitome of what we love about Farmer's Markets. It is full of diverse opportunities to benefit from the best the county has to offer. The local produce is at the top of the list, but it also offers much more and a true since of community. It is the major gathering place through out the season. I live in Indianapolis and utilize many of the local markets here, but none can compare to the Orange County Market in experience and genuine community experience.

Great volunteer staff, all local products sold exclusively by the producers themselves, may be the largest market for the size of the rural community that supports it.

The Orleans Farmer's Market is an amazing place to spend your Saturday morning in a lovely, small-town park. The vendors and volunteers are the friendliest around, the produce and handmade products are the best, and the live music provided by local jammers is beyond compare! Each week brings a new special attraction, from top chefs preparing special dishes with local produce to star-gazing, zucchini racing, and scarecrow-making! This market draws regular customers from an area much larger than our own county...and there are excellent reasons they keep coming back!

Orleans is booming every Saturday morning with items from the garden, crafts, baked goods and hand made wood items. When 65 to 90 vendors get together and crowds come from all surrounding counties it makes for a great morning.

Ours is not just a farmers market, it is in every way a community gathering place. We have music, books, free coffee, free books for kids, yoga classess, chef demos with lot of great samples, and something special every week from astronomy to rock hounds to square dancing. We only charge our vendors $5 a season and even encourage children to try vending with free spots. Our vendors are some of the friendliest you will find. If one doesn't have what you are looking for, they will try to help you find it. Our location is a beautiful town square park with lots of trees for shade and a playground for children. Truely, we are a tiny town with a great big heart and fabulous farmers market.

It brings our whole community together: chefs from big hotels & little organic farmers, readers & cheap books, musicians & listeners, eaters & good, fresh food! We found our favorite new friends there since we recently moved here. Really, the HomeGrown farmer's market changed our lives & all for the better.

The Orange County Farmers Market is a wonderful place to buy everything from produce to had made crafts. It is also a wonderful place to visit with friends, listen to wonderful music or learn something new through one of the many workshops. It is truly the best market I have ever experienced. All the vendors are so nice and helpful and this organization is run by very talented volunteers like Alice and Jim Wooten and Debbie and Bob Turner who give tirelessly of their time, money and talents. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderul place to experience right in our back yard. And that is why OUR Farmers Market is the best of the best.

The Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market is an incredible asset for our community. It provides a variety of quality products, many of them organicaly grown. Because of our rural location, having quality fresh produced on a weekly basis at reasonable prices, would be nearly for our community to enjoy. Our market has become a community gathering place where, we can listen to live music provided by our local musicians, pick-up books to read during the week from our Buck-a-Book trailer, and catch up with the local news/gossip. We provide free coffee and the vendors provide excellent different types of breads to go with the coffee. The children too have much fun at the playground and pick up books for their age level free of charge. This is a community and family market, a place we love to gather every Saturday morning. For many of us, this is the event of of the week. I feel that our Farmers Market is providing a vital service to out community. This is the reason for giving our Farmers Market my 150% support and I hope you do too. Thank you for allowing me to share my pride and support of our Orange County HomwGrown Farmers Market.

OCHG Farmer's Market is the friendliest market I've been to. The host tent works hard to make vendors and shoppers feel welcome. The event is well-organized. All the volunteers happily help where they're needed, whatever is needed. There is always music from local musicians jamming with happy, happy songs that keep your toes tapping! The vendors at the market smile easily and are not pushy. You can tell they enjoy vending at the market. There is diversity of vendors and products. Everyone is welcome! The cooking demos are superb and the chefs make it a point to use products at the market! It's just a happy place to be!
