At this market you meet some of the most peaceful, loving and down-to-earth folks in the world. It leaves no surprise that the quality of produce, baked goods and other items reflect that of their vendor. It is a livelihood for some, a hobby for others, but most of all, it provides a civil service to anyone who loves good food.

I shop at the Athens Farmers Market regularly to purchase locally produced fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat, cider, desserts and breads. I feel good about providing my family with good quality, sustainably grown food while supporting area farmers. I also enjoy visiting with all the friends I invariably see there.

Besides being the social event for Saturday mornings, our market has the best selection for local produce - vegies & fruit; some of the tastiest and healthiest baked goods and granolas; great eggs, meats, cheeses and salsas; in addition to the wide variety of flowers, plants & shrubs for sale. We also have the opportunity to sit and chat with friends over a freshly brewed cup of tea while eating locally produced lunch items. I also enjoy the monthly food contests and the free foods that we get to sample. Lastly, the vendors are very friendly and informative and I commend them for being at the market in rain or shine year round.

It's bigger than all the farmers markets total in Charlotte, NC, & it provides an astoundingly creative array of foods. We got the best lunch we've had in some time by buying from a variety of vendors. Just wish I lived closer, so I could shop there regularly.

It is absolutely one of the best reasons to live in Athens, OH! Top quality produce, meats, poultry, eggs, fresh cut flowers, handmade gift items, elegant, artisanal food products - it's a staggering array of sustainable, renewable goods that help the community and region to provide health and well being for all. What's not to love about that?

The market effects the living quality of Athens. We are able to buy excellent food, develop rich relationships with the farmers and producers of product. It is a community event. It is a year round market. Farmers go there in heat and severe cold as do patrons. Athens maintains an excellent local food community

when i was a graduate student at ou in the late 90's and early 00's, i went to the farmer's market nearly every weekend. it was a place for me to see my fellow classmates, friends, and even some of my professors. it was a lovely way to wind down a busy week of teaching and taking classes. i so enjoyed hearing the music, buying casa nueva salsa, fresh produce, baked goods, the best wildflowers, and getting a lemon shake-up from the ali baba booth. now that i am not in athens anymore, every saturday i miss going to the farmer's market there. nothing around my neck of the woods can compare even though i do support my local farmer's markets. the times that i have visiting athens since graduation, i have planned my trip around saturday morning to be sure i can visit my favorite vendors. for those of you who are fortunate enough to call athens home, i envy your being able to have the farmer's market a part of your weekly routine.

Obtaining my produce from local growers. Knowing where my food comes from is an important part of my health, and the quality, variety and abundance of foods tha tI can find at the Athens Farmers Market is superior to any grocery store-bought produce I've ever come across. I particularly appreciate that the Athens Farmers Market has made itself available to people who depend on food assistance by accepting food stamps, thereby increasing the chances that poverty-stricken people will be able to have access to fresh, healthy, local foods. The Farmers Market is definitely one of the gems of this town.

The Athens Farmers Market is the best place to get your produce, salsas, and bread in the area! There is practically no food miles and you get to meet the people that actually grow your food. Additionally, giving your money directly to the farmer in exchange for their goods is a great experience. This is by far the best farmers market I have ever been to and go nearly every week!

I have lived in Athens for the last 21 years, and have watched as it has grown and developed into the market it is today. The Athens Farmers Market has done wonders to bring this community together from the youngest child to the oldest residents, and has created a way for locals to share their produce, buy fresh food for their families, and (being in a small town) the market has given us a way to socialize and chat up friends from all around southeastern Ohio. It is a place that holds fond memories of summer.

In southern Ohio you wont find a better, friendlier, Farmers Market, with many products being organic and local the Athens Farmers Market is the best. However due to lack of funding they have to set up in a parking lot and have tried several times to get a covered space, they are even outside in the winter. Still all year round the Athens Farmers Market is a very happening place.

Fresh produce, fresh flowers & plants, fresh FOOD (prepared, baked, preserved, it's good!). Directly supports the local economy. Great opportunity to meet the vendors, ask questions on all things food, gardening, weather, food market insights. There is a festival atmosphere where young to old come together out doors to see what is being offered and in the process become part of the fun of the market.

The Farmer's market provides a sustainable way of living. A a vegetarian and person dedicated to environmental responsibility, it is a haven for fresh vegetables grown organically and often with heirloom seeds. The stalls offer fresh breads from local bakeries, flowers, foodstuffs, and one most likey knows several vendors on a personal basis or at least with the knowledge of seeing them around town. You can stroll the market and get breakfast, an excellent cup of tea or coffee(fair trade) while supporting your community.

The Athens Farmers Market is more than a place ... it is an event. It's almost like a weekly mini-county fair! Even when I can't think of anything I need/want to buy, I find myself on auto pilot going there almost every Saturday (even cold ones!). The food ... the music ... the people with their friendly faces! And AFM even makes sure that people who normally can't afford good food don't have to endanger their health by eating processed gunk.

We look forward to this little festival of fun every Saturday where we run into so many friends and enjoy the fresh, tasty goods. The Athens Farmers Market is an opportunity for local people from around Athens county to gather and share produce and other products that are locally grown. It is clean, well organized and everyone is super friendly. You should come check it out!

We just love the friendly atmosphere. It's clean, well laid out with lots of choices. It brings on a smile. Mr. Peterson collects donations of food or cash to purchase farmer's market produce for the local food bank. It's a win win situation.

I recently moved to Bakersfield, CA for the summer and while there farmer's market isn't bad I really miss Athens. Athens has a great blend of fruits and vegetables but also the baked goods and homemade coffees, jams, salsas, etc. and that makes it the best.

The main reason is that I like good tasting food! I can usually riper, fresher, more flavorful food at the Athens Farmers Market, especially fruits, tomatoes and corn. I can also get some fruits--Niagara grapes and native persimmoms--that are not available at the supermarket. I also think it is good to support local growers.

I've been attending the Athens Farmers' Market for over 30 years. It is not only a fine market with great variety, and even buskers for entertainment, but also the biggest weekly social event in the region. A wonderful atmosphere, filled with great food, live music, and frolicking children. The local Teen Theater Workshop even does presentations like The Fifteen Minute Hamlet, by Tom Stoppard, and Junior Chef School. What more could one ask for?

It is wonderful! Friendly people, lots of healthy organic food at affordable prices. Ample variety of veggies, fruits, cheeses, and meats. Beautiful flowers, wonderful sweets, and dog treats. The bread is addicting. Music playing as you stroll from vendor to vendor. Children laughing. The Donation Station which lends a helping hand to non-profit organizations in the area. Great community support. A fun place to bike on a Saturday morning. If you need to chat with someone, chances are you will see them at the Farmer's Market.

Because it supports the best of Athens in terms of organic local produce and locally produced food products from local produce, not to mention music. Because it's year round. I can get local organic produce at this market every week throughout the year. Because it's a great organization and a great place for social networking. Because the organization is a strong overall community support venue throughout the year.

We are in the process of getting a local farmers market going near us in Pomeroy, but currently Athens Farmers market is where our local growers in Meigs County sell. Even though it is 45 minutes away from us it is the most amazing farmers market I have ever seen, the variety of local produce and local products is mind boggling, you get to see and meet wonderful people and the energy from the food and people is most refreshing!! 1. My family likes to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and I like them to meet the people that grow those fresh fruits and vegetables. 2. AFM gives me a sense of community you can't get in a big city. Why live in a small city and not enjoy that kind of perk? 3. I'd rather our grocery dollar stay local--I trust the food and the sellers trust that I will spend a portion of it supporting their products. 4. I can ride my bike there and back! I take a backpack, load it up, and ride home. How European!

The vendors are dedicated, consistent, and very quality oriented. The selection is vast; we even have live musicians playing their guitars, wooden flutes, or whatever, interspersed (just one or two each market) among the vendors. I eat lunch from the prepared foods booths, like the bakeries, and do much or all of my week's grocery shopping right there. I adjust my menus to the seasons, and because the market is so complete, I need very little else most weeks besides milk, coffee, salt. I have been to many others, but this one is the best, by far.

The Athens Farmers Market not only provides a wide variety of locally produced foods, but also it is a vital part of the Athens community. In addition to the beautiful vegetables, fruits, plants and flowers, there are baked goods, locally produced jams, honeys, and many other products. This all comes in a friendly environment ringing with live music, laughter and friendship. Our market takes WIC coupons, and senior citizens supplemental coupons, and we have a donation stations for local food banks so that the less fortunate can have fresh, nutritious food, too.

I no longer live in Athens, but I grew up there and then spent an additional four years living there as an adult. Going to the Farmer's Market was a highlight of my week before we moved - it's a place for socializing as well as for buying locally grown/made food. The Farmer's Market in Athens is a unique event - I haven't found anything else like it.

Great food, freshly picked, and supporting our local economy which unfortunately needs support. "For every $100 spent at local independent merchants, $68 returns to the community though taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Chains, only $43 stays here. Buy online and nothing comes home." Knit Local too!

The Athens Farmers Market is a vibrant center of the communities and local economies around Athens. It is a culturally diverse mixture of the people, including appalachians, hippies, Amish, local businesspeople, and young people. It features live music most weekends. The vendors sell a variety of exquisite baked goods to organic and low-spray produce, regular produce, flowers, and many other products. The prices are oftentimes lower than area stores and their quality is without compare. It is a vibrant hub with a 30+ year tradition in the area.

A market that brings together a community of excellent produce, friends that may not see each other all week but know for sure they will share that togetherness at the Market and last but not least, the Art, the music and the feeling of freedom the market leaves you with when you leave it till you come back again.

Because it's excellent. Every Saturday of the year, even mid-winter, you can buy all you need for a meal there. There are always lots of organic & naturally-grown options. There's always lots of ethnic selections. Always local orchards represented, local bakers, local produce, local honey, local meat producers, and so on and so on. This farmer's market TRULY supports LOCAL agriculture, the local economy, and sustainability. It also heavily supports food programs for the hungry.

i like the way that poor people are unable to buy fresh local food because of the "non competition" clause in the by laws. In effect, vendors are bullied to keep their prices in line with the highest priced (and most established) vendors. I like the way that poor people of Athens Co. are forced to buy imported produced at the chain grocery stores because of this, and the way that vendors take home boxes and boxes of perishable strawberries because were not allowed to drop their prices to the amount the public would pay. I also like the way that the Athens Farmers Market flies in the face of federal laws aimed at preventing price fixing. My question is, is the Athens Farmers Market receiving grant money and yet still perpetuating the price fixing?

Local foods taste better are better for the local economy and environment are a given. The big boost for me is how important it is for community building, it gives us a place and chance to meet with our neighbors and be part of the bigger whole, which I don't really feel part of at my chain store no matter how convenient it is.

The Athens Farmers Market has become an important part of the Athens Community. Local farmers and producers offer their vegetables and fruits, plants, meats, breads, flowers, baked goods, cheeses and so much more for sale. It provides the community the opportunity to buy locally as well as a place to greet friends and neighbors, as so many people in the Athens Community make it a priority to shop at the Farmers Market each Saturday.

I try very hard to eat mostly local foods and the Athens Farmers Market helps me meet that goal all through the year. I depend on it for my weekly grocery shopping and also appreciate the community energy that bursts each Saturday morning. I also try to ride my bike there each week on the bike path to purchase my food which helps me live sustainably.

I love shopping at the farmers market rather than at kroger. The farmers market is open year round. The market is bi-weekly. I can buy goat cheese! All the veggies are TRULY fresh. It only took ONE gallon of gas to get the produce to the consumer.

The Athens Farmers Market offer a huge variety of locally-produced products from flowers, vegetables and fruits to meats, honey, and a wide variety of other home-grown/made items. The market always has a festive atmosphere; it's the meeting place for friends and neighbors, with someone always providing folksy music in the background. It provides a much-needed outlet for local producers to sell their products locally, eliminating the middleman.

I support The Athens, Ohio Farmersí Markey because it is a year round market that demonstrates the commitment of producers and consumers in the Athens area. The produce, flowers and locally produced foods show our community to be creative and committed in a sustainable way. We shop, visit... exchange ideas over Fair Trade Coffees and locally baked goods. Babies smile in their strollers, the elderly buy affordable, healthy foods, our mayor greats individuals and hears of their latest concerns, the International Community learns of our culture and shares their own while petitions circulate, guitars serenade and we all bask in the delicacy of hope. The Athens Farmers Market is open year round Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 10-1:00. It is a feast for the senses and not to be missed!
