In addition to preserving a rich local history, the Broadway Market Farmers Market understands the importance of making fresh, wholesome food available to the Buffalo and WNY community. The BMFM's commitment to the community is outstanding.

The Broadway Market has been a Buffalo tradition since before I was born. Today more than anything a positive and wholesome tradition should be maintained for the next generation to appreciate. In this age of plastic substitutions and microwavable ill-health, the fresh food market is the healthiest and the most economical way to feed a substantially large family. DO IT YOURSLF, IS BEST.

The broadway market has been a staple in my life for years. I remember when my mom and dad use to shop there. My grandfather was a huxter (someone who sold fruit and veggies) they use to have ton of farmers coming out to sell. Then we would go see my dad who worked at Satlers across the street. I always, always go every year with my family at easter. Such a wonderful place. Loads of great memories of family that is no longer here.

A place for Buffalonians to gather, where food is fresh and community grows closer. The local varieties of food, and friends are eclectic. The unity of the city reflects the "salad bowl" of our country...a brighter fresher dish because of strong individual flavors!

Family tradition! My Grandmother and Mom were born on Sobieski St., shopping at the Braodway Market has been almost a 100 year tradition in my family. It is cool to think that I am able to shop and procure wonderful foods just like my great grandmother did! A City Treasure for sure!

I was a little girl living nearby when my Grandma and Aunts would take me to the bustling Broadway Market in the 1970s. I have such vivid memories of the market, it's people, the tradition that makes the Broadway Market the landmark that it is today. I frequent the market often, and am enjoying it's revival. Please give our market the prize. :)

I support the Broadway Market Farmers Market because all of the produce and flowers come from local farms in our area. Also because they are fresh and very reasonable in price in comparison to other markets and stores.

I grew up in Buffalo and would often go to the Market with my family. It was tradition. Now, living in DC, I find Farmer's Markets everywhere and can see the value of them so much more clearly. Local farmers need a place to sell their goods and the residents of the area should have the opportunity to purchase the freshest, most delicious produce they know. The only way to preserve such a relationship is to keep places like the Broadway Market thriving!

I am of a european heritage and would like to see the tradition go on. America should not be a melting pot, but a place where every culture, nation and heritage can stay as they are and live together side by side in peace.
  • paula vanbuskirk
  • 129 days, 17 hours ago
As our country's people are becomimg more and more the same in this 'melting pot' we still need to retain our family history and values. I grew up south of Buffalo, so my trips into the city were few, but most did include a trip to the Broadway Market. Mom and Dad would get foods and items that my dad would use to make his polish sausage. I can still remember the smells, the people, the noise and what, to a little girl, seemed to be another world. And it was...it was a grouping of mostly Eastern European who had immigrated to the US and now were making a living 'selling their wares'. Over the years children have taken over the sppots from their parents, others have moved in while others moved on. The market is a living thing as are most markets like this. They need to be kept alive.

Because its one of the only places in buffalo that I remember as a kid and it keeps on going. Though the neighborhood has changed immensely it hasent made the strong polish turn and run away. I'm back to buffalo a few times a year and I almost always stop and pick things up for my trip back.My mother was born on Gibson street in 1915 and I remember the stories she told me of the old neighbohood and its a shame that it couldn't stay close to the way it has in Kaiser town.Kaiser town seems to have stayed to the original heritage. I am sure that all people living near the Broadway market need it to stay. There are so few places to shop in the area, especially for our speciality items. Please keep these people in business. Its comforting to be able to see the same vendors yeAR AFTER YEAR.

First and foremost, it's really the only source of locally grown meats, produce, etc for a large part of Buffalo's urban community. Secondly, it is a major part of the history of the city's Polonia community. And thirdly, it is one of the coolest places to shop in all of WNY!

When I think "family traditions", I think Broadway Market. We grew up going to the Market to prepare for every holiday. I will always remember all of fun times I had when I was little going with my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Even though we have moved away, I still long for the sights and sounds of my childhood. I hope that when I have children I will be able to make special trips with them to Buffalo, more specifically, the Broadway Market so that they can have lasting memories and traditions as well. No other place compares to the Boradway Market!

I have amazing memories of my Polish grandmother taking all of us to the market every Saturday. The smells, the sights, the history would wrap me in a warm blanket of tradition and love. As an adult, we now take our children to the market, and condinue the traditions of past generations. The market is in an economically depressed section of Buffalo, and struggles to remain open. $5,000 would serve as a much needed shot in the arm to help keep this slice of history available for future generations to share.

The Broadway Market is a historical and cultural center. When shopping there, not only is one shopping but also paying homage to the efforts of keep up its tradition. It is a center of Polish culture, and the heart of Polonia (Broadway-Fillmore district). Also, it is appropriate to support efforts of a farmer's market, since the farm on Wilson Street is a few blocks away. Both, along with the Central Terminal, the beautiful churches, and other landmarks big and small will serve in a long-overdue East Side renaissance. Dyngus Day is a start. The Farmer's Market will take the plan further into fruition.

It has been a tradition for my family!!! I truly believe that we should support all local growers and businesses. You never get the same quality or taste from commercially grown products. America was founded on Agriculture. Our technology may have advanced, but the tried and true forms of farming have proved to be simply rewarding. Taste something locally grown and you shall experience it, yourself!

This land mark market provides families with ethnic products unavailable else where. With a diverse community and region this market is an oasis, a light house if you may, that was our fathers' father place to obtain a piece of homeland that we celebrated everyday and every holiday to such an extent that I would be hard pressed to do without such a place!! The sights, sounds, and smells as well as tastes are what I sought secondly when returning home from a long absence and if someone out of town requests something most of the time you will find it there, fresh.

The history of the Broadway Market makes it a treasure of Buffalo and WNY. The market is one of the oldest open markets of its kind in the country and continues to be an important symbol of a brighter time in this community's history. While fairly small, $5,000 can be put to much use at and for the Broadway Market. The market is the centerpiece of a neighborhood and if that neighborhood is to ever revitalize, the market will be a big reason why. One should consider this award as a down-payment on a better future for Buffalo and particularly the E. Side.

The Broadway Market is rich with history for the Buffalo Area and has touched many generations and cultures in this region for over a century. This award would help fill so many needs for this historic site which remains open thanks to the numerous volunteers and their countless hours of support. This is a very worthwhile cause.

I support the Broadway Market Farmers Market because I have many fond memeories of shopping there with my Grandmother in the 1960's. This long-time market is a venerated institution and is instrumental in allowing folks to buy local produce which is far superior to trucked in California quasi-fruits and veg. Thanks Broadway market!

Since I moved to Buffalo (30 years ago!) I have gone to the Broadway Market every year at Easter time (as well as other times during the year...I am lucky enough to teach less than a mile away). I have loaded up on pierogies, kluski noodles, fresh rye bread, farmers' cheese, wonderful fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, and chocolates. My two children have tried horseradish and delicious sweet hot mustard and have been able to experience the kind of market that I grew up attending in NYC with my Polish grandmother and great grandmother. It's been a wonderful experience! Now with Buffalo's demographics changing I think we should hold on to our traditions with an open mind to our present situation and our future as a city. Let's respect our Polish background...but keep in mind that the Broadway Fillmore District is changing. How about if the Broadway Market becomes the Broadway International Market? Let's hold onto our heritage...but embrace other cultures as well. A vibrant city cherishes it's roots...... but also welcomes new branches.

It is a tradition in our family to go to the Broadway Market to shop for holiday item. What a wonderful experience to see all of the ethnic foods on display and be able to buy them for our own families. Not only is it educational, to talk to the vendors about their product but to be able to bring it home to enjoy on the table. Who is going to make a butter lamb for the Easter table and one can just go to the Broadway market to buy one. Having all the fresh vegetables available in the old atmosphere of the market is wonderful. It is an experience, not just a trip to the store shopping. Please give the much needed support the Broadway Market by awarding them with the $5000 award.

I grew up in Buffalo and was pretty much raised at the Market. My grandparents lived on Gibson....my mom and her sisters would walk over to the Market and hang out. My uncle's dad had a stand there. The Market was a lifesaver during the blizzard of '77. I was 6 months old and my parents were both stuck at work. My grandma walked to the Market to get me diapers, as I was stuck with them longer than was expected! The Market is priceless, a true cultural icon. Easter festivities there and all the Polish delicacies are one of a kind!! Long live the Broadway Market!!

It's in a neighborhood that very much needs fresh produce. There aren't many supermarkets in that neighborhood, and all people deserve fresh food!! Not to mention it is a meeting place for old and young alike! It has a very rich history and Buffalo would not be the same without it.

I have been going to the market since I was a baby with my family. I used to ride the Broadway bus with my Baba to do shopping. I wnjoy the fresh meat and delicious baked goods offered on site. The smell of Paczki makes me smile.

The produce is always fresh. It is in a convienient location for those, especially the elderly that live in the community and do not have transportation. It is an asset to the community.

People are friendly, I love two of the bakeries, the gift shop of Polish items is first rate, the produce is inexpensive and I love lunch at Perison's any day of the week.

There's no better place in town to purchase fresh meats, produce,& yes, pure horserash & all the while enjoy interacting with the people there & almost in a way revisiting days gone by. ...Grandma & Grandpa, who never even owned a car, would walk us there. And, yes, that was a big deal!!! The street Broadway in itself just wouldn't be the same without the Broadway Market on the map!

This historic marketplace is a Buffalo tradition, especially at Easter when people from all over the region shop there for their Butter lambs, Polish sausage, chocolates, horseradish and a host of other goodies.

Because it's the best place to get good, fresh meat & produce at a reasonable price, plus how to prepare and serve them for the best results. It's a virtual "town square" where people can talk about community & politics. Immigrants can practice English, learn how to handle money, pay bills, and learn the basics of American culture. The broadway Market's the best!

I support the Broadway Market's Farmers Market because the Broadway Market is a huge attraction during many times of the year, every single year. When people come to Buffalo, one of their tourist spots is our famous market on Broadway. Our market always has the freshest produce, and the friendliest workers. Everytime you step inside, you are bound to receive old childhood memories. Everyone loves the Broadway Market, and I will always support it.

The Broadway Market is an institution in the City of Buffalo. It is a local treasure, a gem of our city's past, present, and future. The market is still a gathering place amoung people from different backgrounds to socialize and learn from others.

My mother was born & raised in the neighborhood and I spent a lot of time there growing up. The one thing that you can depend on is the Broadway Market to be there even though pretty much everything else in the neighborhood has changed. The farmers market allows easy access for members of the community to purchase fresh produce as well as have an experience that they might not otherwise have. Not only do you have the opportunity to eat healthy it can be used as a learning experience in a neighborhood that can truly benefit from it. It's a whole other world.
