This market has an amazing selection of local Hawaiian fruits and veggies. They also sell yummy Thai banana tamales and other locally made treats. The market is a gathering place for the community and supporting local farmers is a must if we want to keep the islands from having to import costly food from the mainland.

You wouldn't believe the variety of prepared and natural foods here! On top of all that, there are great crafts both Hawaiian and non.

Although I live in Madison, Wisconsin where we have many superb farmer's markets and the biggest producer based one I love the Hilo's Farmer's Market -- it is far more colorful and varied. Official days are Wednesdays and Saturdays but vendors are there 7 days a week. My favorite items to buy to consume or bring back to the mainland are fern shoots, Hawaiian ohia flower honey, kulolo (Hawaiian pudding) and Peruvian tamales. Some other "exotics" are fresh poi, fish, and Filipino pastries. Locally grown tomatoes, salad greens, eggplant, beans, cabbage -- the "usual" farmer's market fare -- as well as Asian veg Okinawan sweet potatoes (the purple/blue type), won bok, bok choy, kai choy. Fruits include papayas, bananas, avocadoes, breadfruit, coconuts, dragon fruit, mangoes, lychees, long gang, tangerines. Cut flowers abound as do potted anthuriums and orchids. Hilo being mostly wet and rainy you go there with serious intent to buy not to eyeball, so vendors will bargain with you too! It's fun. I visit Hilo twice a year and never miss a market when I'm there,

Great produce and flowers, all grown here on the Big Island, and wonderful people running the market and selling there.

It is a wonderful community-oriented friendly place where you can buy locally grown tropical flowers, plants, crafts and of course fruits and veggies. Locally grown is especially important for us in Hawai`i as our food comes mainly from California.

I buy fresh organic fruits, vegetables, and eggs there twice a week! It's 6 blocks from my house, and the food provided is fabulous. There are also great ethnic and vegan chefs providing tasty snacks and meals. We also have crafts; lots of sarongs, hand-made jewelry, and clothing, some made from natural local fibers.
