Stop President Bush's Global War on Women

We, the undersigned, call on the President and Congress to demand that President Bush stop his global war on women.

It's time for anti-choice politicians to stop exploiting the United States' wealth and status to impose their agenda on the entire world. Since President Bush entered office, he has imposed countless restrictions on the reproductive freedom of women everywhere. While Bush's right-wing political base delights in his actions, the impact is being felt first and foremost by poor women throughout the world.
  • The President's first act in office was to revive the Reagan-era global gag rule (a.k.a. "Mexico City" policy), under which foreign family planning agencies may not receive U.S. assistance if they provide abortion services, including counseling or referrals on abortion, or lobby to make or keep abortion legal in their own country - even if they do these activities with their own funds.
  • For the past three years, the Bush administration has denied $34 million annually in funding for birth control, maternal and child health care, and HIV/AIDS prevention for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. This money could have prevented 2 million unwanted pregnancies, 800,000 induced abortions, and 4700 maternal deaths, as well as 77,000 infant and child deaths each year.
  • After making the welcome announcement that he would dramatically increase U.S. funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care in Africa and the Caribbean, President Bush then went on to use the Global AIDS bill as a vehicle for promoting anti-condom, pro-abstinence policies. Despite the fact that unprotected heterosexual sex is now the leading cause of HIV transmission, the President signed a Global AIDS Bill reserving a sizeable portion of the funds for abstinence-only sexuality education.
Every minute of every day, a woman dies of pregnancy related causes, and 6 people die of AIDS. The vast majority of these deaths occur in the developing world. Instead of putting the full weight of our country behind ending these preventable deaths, President Bush has slashed funding for family planning, and erected barriers to reproductive health care services and information around the world.

Please sign this petition to call on the United States to save lives, not play politics with women's lives!

To President Bush and Congressional Leaders:

I call on the administration and Congress to demand that President Bush stop his global war on women.

Please stop playing politics with women's lives. The United States should fund family planning, instead of slashing funding and erecting barriers to reproductive health care services and information around the world.

I call on you to stop the global war won women and fully fund international family planning programs.

Sincerely,
