Tell the Department of Energy: Prioritize Energy Efficiency!

  • by: Earthjustice
  • recipient: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and President Obama
During the presidential debates, President Obama said energy policy will be a top priority of his administration. One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs, reduce our electricity consumption, and save us all money every month on our utility bills is to adopt the strongest energy efficiency standards for household appliances and commercial products. Energy efficiency is America's first fuel, the fastest, cleanest and cheapest energy source.

The Department of Energy is considering a new standard for fluorescent tube lights and other kinds of light bulbs that over the next three decades will save enough energy to power every household in America for an entire year, and save customers and business over $66 billion.

The final decision comes out in June 2009, but we need to send a strong message now to the DOE and to Obama that energy efficiency must be at the top of our nation's energy priorities.

Tell President-elect Obama and all our government officials that energy efficiency is the fastest, cheapest, cleanest energy source.
Dear Department of Energy and President Obama,

Energy efficiency is the cheapest, fastest and cleanest energy source. As you consider setting energy efficiency standards for general service fluorescent lamps and incandescent reflector lamps, I urge you to adopt the strongest energy efficiency standards for these products.

Cost savings from more efficient lighting will net consumers and businesses over $66 billion over 30 years. We can also reduce our global warming pollution by 954 million tons between 2012 and 2042, just by requiring more energy efficient lighting products.

With this standard, you have the ability to take a stand for businesses and consumers that will allow us to save money, lower energy costs, lessen global warming, and reduce our electricity demand.

President Obama has pledged to prioritize energy in his administration. As an individual citizen, I am able to take small actions that lower costs and have a positive impact on the environment. But as the Department of Energy, you have the ability to have a huge positive impact on the environment and on our economy. I urge you to be a leader in this important fight and adopt the strongest energy efficiency standards for lighting products and every other standard you will consider in the future.
