In 2010, there were about 524 million people aged 65 or older — and that number is expected to grow dramatically in the near future. In nearly every country, the over-60 demographic is growing faster than any other age group, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports.
While some traditional cultures have great reverence for their elders, other cultures don’t always show the same level of respect. Age discrimination is a pervasive problem; misconceptions and stereotypes hurt seniors especially in the workforce. AARP reports that some employers assume senior candidates are slower, less creative, less productive and more expensive. But actual assessments of senior workers show that virtually none of these stereotypes are true.
