10 Outrageously Expensive Food Items

10 Outrageously Expensive Food Items

It’s surprising how much people will pay for extravagant food. Great eye opener for the health nut that I am. Take a look at some of the most outrageous and expensive foods in the world.

1.Pizza: $4,200

That’s right, you can get a 12-inch pizza packed with some of the world’s most expensive ingredients like lobster marinated in cognac and caviar soaked in champagne. The best part? It has edible 24-karat gold flakes sprinkled on top. The world’s most expensive pizza is created by Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurant in London.

Hmm… do you think you can get that gluten free?

2. Cake: $52 million

This six-tier high cake is almost five feet tall. It’s decorated with over 2,000 diamonds, equivalent to 2,046 carats. “We jumped at the opportunity to create the world’s most expensive wedding cake,” said Tim and Jules Smith who own Cake, a bakery in Chester, England. 3. Alba White Truffles: $330,000

White truffles are the second most expensive food by weight. They are high on the gourmet chef’s list of important ingredients. The Alba White Trufle grows only under specific oak trees in Alba, Italy, and their odor is considered to be an aphrodisiac. Dogs and female pigs are used to hunt this precious truffle.

Stanley Ho purchased two truffles, just under three pounds for $330,000.

4. Single Watermelon: $6,100

This isn’t your average red watermelon. It is a rare black watermelon called Densuke, which is grown only on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. “The watermelons aren’t really black, they are dark green. They just look black when the sun isn’t shining directly on them,” says Youtuber rvalens2, who grew them in Idaho at I Dig My Garden.

While I’ve never tried Densuke before, I love regular watermelons for their taste and health benefits.

5. Saffron: $2,700 per pound

Saffron has been sold for as much as $2,700 per pound. It is so expensive because it must be harvested by hand and it takes more than 75,000 threads, for one pound of the spice. High-quality saffron can cost as much as $15 per gram. This outrageous price seems like the most reasonable to me, considering its uniqueness and health benefits. 3.0

6. Bagel: $1,000

That price includes a donation to the Les Amis d’Escoffier Scholarship for current and future culinary students. It includes white truffles, cream cheese and goji berry infused Riesling jelly. And, of course, this bagel is topped with edible golden leaves. This is the creation of Executive Chef Frank Tujague at Westin Hotels. This is one the cheapest items on my list, but I’m sorry to write that it’s no longer available to order.

7. Ice: $7.50 per cube

Do you want ice that is meticulously designed?  Ice that takes 45 minute to melt? Gläce Luxury Ice created ice-cubes for use in premium drinks and cocktails. This is high-class ice!

Actually they are not cubes, they’re perfect spheres of ice made from purified water and exactly 2.5 inches in diameter, which is high-level fancy for drinks.

8. Almas Caviar: $25,000 per Kilo

Almas caviar comes from rare sturgeons in Iran that are between 60 and 100 years old. There is only one place to buy it: the Caviar House & Prunier in London England’s Picadilly. It comes in a 24-karat gold tin for $25,000.

9. Wild Kopi Luwak Coffee: $3,000 per kilo

This is one very odd expensive food that is created when small animals eat regular coffee beans and poop them out. On the jungle floor on the island of Sumatra the beans are collected and processed. It is apparently richer than typical coffee, with a chocolate undertone.

I’m not a coffee drinker myself for several reasons and make my own dandelion coffee for free!

10. Most Expensive Dessert The Frozen Haute Chocolate for $25,000

This ice cream sundae is a blend of 28 cocoas, (14 of the most expensive in the world).  Then it is decorated with edible gold and served in a goblet lined with edible gold. At the bottom of the sundae there is an 18 karat gold bracelet with 1 carat of diamonds. You eat the sundae, with a gold spoon decorated in white and chocolate diamonds that you get to take home after your indulgence. Serendipity 3, New York serves it.

What’s Your Reaction?

Personally, I love food so I am attracted to a few exotic items on the list. Still, I’m shocked and disgusted by the shameless excess.

If money were not an issue, which one of these foods would you like on your menu?

Which food item do you think is the most absurd?

All absurd to me!

11:36AM PDT on Aug 31, 2013

There is no way I could ever justify spending that much money on something to eat. In a few hours, it will just turn into shit.

12:04AM PDT on Aug 30, 2013

Even if I had the money or was a super mega billionaire, I'd never waste my money on frivolous things like this. There's so much more important things you could do with it. With the money you spend on just one of those foods, you can feed a dozen poor people! urgh

It is shameful to pay such amounts for "specialities" while people in some parts of the world starve and eat from the dust bins.

If you have the money and are barmy enough to pay it, I hope it's worth it.

After seeing pics of posh cakes on line, sorry, I wasn't impressed by the picture of the Cestrian cake.
