10 Rarest Dog Breeds (Slideshow)

10. Komondor

A national treasure in Hungary, the Komondor is perhaps best known for its long, corded coat. The dreadlocks form as the dogs reach adulthood, and typically measure in at 8-11 inches long. And these coats are heavy, the heaviest in the dog world, and have historically helped make the sturdy pooches survive any number of adverse weather conditions. In Hungary, most of the two to three thousand Komondor guard livestock on farms or serve as pets in rural areas. Stateside, a similarly-sized population is primarily composed of show dogs.

I love dogs and would always try to get an 'unwanted' one.My first dog was a blue merle border collie I got him from a farmer for free and my current one is a whippet/saluki she was free cause her owner did not want her after having a child. To take these dogs was the best decisions I made because what these animals gave me is priceless.

The photo of the Thai Ridgeback isn't correct, it's a photo that is most likely a Rhodesian Rdigeback. I haven't looked through all the posts to see if anyone picked up on that, just wanted to get potential Thai caretakers on the right path.

I could add some: Iceland dog, Mudi, Puli, Harzer Fuchs, Gelbbacke, German Schafspudel and others. Difficult to safe them, as we all are adopting mutts. :-)
Extinction seems to be the fate of these old and highly secilised breeds. Times and circumstances are changing, so are dog breeds. Sad, of course but there are new ones like Bolonka Zwetna.
