Day after day you show up faithfully to work, plop your stuff down in your cramped cubicle, and endure endless interruptions by fellow colleagues. You pay an insane amount of money for a simple turkey club sandwich at lunchtime, only to shell out even more money for your hellishly long commute back home at the end of a not-so-productive workday.

It’s a proven fact. Study after study has shown that employees who work remotely are more productive than their in-office counterparts. Chalk it up to not having to chit chat with chatty colleagues, and more time to truly focus on their work, and telecommuters can plow through their workday having accomplished a lot.

Exercise can fall by the wayside if you work in a regular office. After all, it’s only the truly dedicated who will sacrifice their lunch hour to workout when they really need to utilize that hour (or half hour) to run errands and eat, too. With more pockets of free time in their schedules, remote workers can get physical and serious about their health, whether they join a gym or take power walks around their neighborhood at lunchtime.

Think about how much you spend to get to work each day. Then, add to that how much you spend on lunches, snacks, and other items. Finally, calculate your commuting costs and add up the total.
