Dust Mite Neutralizer

Jessica A., MT asks:

Do you have a recipe for killing dust mites? Thanks.

Annie: Tannic acid neutralizes the allergens in dust mites and animal dander. There are some tannic acid powders on the market (check out Real Goods at www.realgoods.com), but you can easily make your own with tannic acid-rich tea, although you need to make sure to test this on the material you are going to spray since tea stains. Make a very, very strong cup of black tea. Strain, cool, and place in a spray bottle. Spray over problem areas.

Giselle, how hot does your steam cleaner get, and what are its psi's? They're great cleaners if they get hot enough, which many don't, and are powerful enough too, which many aren't. The right one should do the trick. I'd do a search as well, because you can always find out new things online which may be your answer.

I have used some powder cleaner on carpets & furniture that seemed to work. You should wear a mask when you're cleaning if you're so sensitive as you're putting the dust in the air. I also use pillow protectors on down pillows The powder, and the masks are sold by allergysolutions.com.

The tannic acid sounds interesting, however, I am living with my significant other. I don't want to risk messing up his furniture, more than I have with other de mite cleaners. They will not go away. I vaccuum, I spray, I steam clean -steaming on other days.
I had a very bad reaction to borax-I got down to 78 lbs. I'm not going to look like a skeleton again--borax is not a choice. I think tea is way too dark for light blue furnature. Please help. I just had a mite explosion , when I didn't vaccuum for 1 1/2 weeks when I was very sick & my man wouldn't vaccuum, either -it brings back childhood memories for him)
PLEASE give me another alternative. Right now, I'm using De-Mite in my laundry, let it soak for 2 hours, then wash it again & letting it soak for another 2 hours. I dry on the hottest cycle. They are still on my clothing & linens that are washed in hot water!!!, so I have to iron. It's ridiculous
Thanks for your help

Penelope P.

Thankyou
